Re: Best Place to Look for Used Collings

Thank you all for your responses. They are all good ideas for a mandolin search.

I asked this question to see where people go for a used mid-tier mandolin because I am interested in possibly...

    Wernick Camp/Gilbert Nelson

I am considering attending a Wernick Jam Camp in North Carolina and have questions.

    1. Is this for all instruments or mandolin specific? I play guitar and mandolin and am mostly interested in...

Re: First build with James Condino

Is this done over consecutive days, or do you have to come back periodically to specific portions? Can a person make a mandolin start to finish, say over a week to 10 days?
  6. Re: Any others here that started their mandolin/instrument later

I was almost 70 when I started mandolin. I have been a guitar player for 60 years. Mandolin was harder to learn, but for me it was easier to figure out tunes on it.

Re: Which kind of Mandolin you play ?

Collings MT2 with cream colored Italian Spruce top and wide nut. What a lovely tone!
  9. Re: Why do some higher end mandos return to the market so quickly

I agree. There is the "thrill of the chase" that doesn't linger once you obtain such target instrument. I think that's the essence of GAS and MAS. Strangely, I have had bouts of GAS but not MAS. ...

Everyone is unique. However, I experienced the same as you in my left thumb due to arthritis. Being super conservative about surgery, I have tried a lot of different things to alleviate the pain. ...

Blackberry Smoke is one of my favorite groups. I really enjoy their instrumental breaks and the lyrics. Charlie Starr is truly a treasure. I don't know how they never made supergroup status.

    Re: What is this pick?

I, too, liked that pick in Sampler #2. I suspect it might be buffalo horn. I tried one in that material years ago and liked it.

Re: The Traveling Pick Sampler - Anyone Interested?

I now have #2, and so far for my guitars I like the Wegen white and the JT picks (both the white and the blue) rounded edges. I am going to start evaluating them all on my mandolin (Collings MT2)...

    Re: String suggestions- something new

+1 on the flat tops. I use them on my Collings MT2 and really like them. I play a lot of bluegrass, and they do well for that as well as giving a rich mellow tone for more melodic tunes.

    JT Picks

I just got the Sampler #2, and in it are a white and a blue JT pick.

I really like them but don't know where they are sold. Does anybody know? Thanks.
  17. Re: New Member, new mando, question about picks....

+1 on the pick sampler. It's so much easier to learn what works for you without a large investment in picks.

Don't overlook a Mid-Missouri in good condition. They are virtually the same as Big Muddy--made by the same guy. Same quality build.

Re: Trinity College Octave vs Eastman 305 Octave

It might do you well to take a look at the APC. I bought one from Kieran two years ago.Sadly, I realized that it wasn't for me and sold it. But it had really nice tone and was beautifully made.
