  1. Re: The best thing about ordering from Pinegrove leathers

The mail was delivered by the peasants before; it’s simply that they’re no longer working for the parasites.

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Phantom power can be scary if you try to connect unbalanced sources to balanced inputs. Don’t turn it on in such circumstances if you don’t know what you’re doing!

    Re: string gauges

I use J74s on my ‘14 Gibson A without any problem. Their necks are shorter and beefier.

I suspect that strings back in the teens and twenties were heavier anyway and people didn’t agonise over...
  4. Re: The best thing about ordering from Pinegrove leathers

Sorry to disappoint you but the “Royal” Mail was sold off to the highest bidder a couple of years ago.

That said, I do have several Pinegrove straps.
  5. Re: Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

I have “sweat rash” marks on my Clark GBOM. In discussion with Austin, we settled on Novus (poss No.2) but I’ve yet to attack the rash with any gusto in case I take too much of the finish off.

    Re: Wow, what a flip!

Isn’t this the way dealers have made a living for many years?
  7. Re: (Godin A8) Pickup battery runs out very quickly

I had a very similar problem with a Fishman Rare Earth guitar pickup where the battery went flat in a matter of days (not months) with nothing connected to it. I suspected the socket and this turned...

Re: Best mandolin wall stand, e.g. hook etc?

I have several of the Hercules hangers and they’re fine. It’s not a problem in the UK (brich and stone built houses) but, as others have said, my only concrn would be how it’s attached to the wall....

Re: Worm Over Robson F style tuners

Keith Robson made me a set of A style, worm over, tuners for my Clark GBOM a few years ago and they certainly turn the right way so I’ve no reason to believe that his F style ones will be any...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

    1) Not necessarily, give it a try.
    2) No; but you might find an acoustic combo amp more convenient for carting around.
  11. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

It probably is but, unfortunately, an invalid use of an apostrophe. I suspect the word you’re looking for is “theses”.

    Carry on folks; fascinating thread!

    Re: Remove Frets & Scoop

But, as I implied, not all mandolins have them anyway. Frets up in “dog whistle” territory seem to be the preserve of instuments with floridas and some bowlbacks.

Re: Breedlove “Black Gold” - Lacks Volume

It’s a US made one but I suspect it hasn’t been played that much in recent years. It has J74s on at the moment but I’ve got a couple of sets of 75s hanging around somewhere so I’ll try those. My only...

Breedlove “Black Gold” - Lacks Volume

Anyone out there have a “Black Gold”?

The one I have is one of several mandolins. I’m used to mandolins with much more punch and volume. I was becoming more and more concerned with using my ‘24...

    Re: Remove Frets & Scoop

If you remove the frets, you’ll have to have it scooped at least as far as the bottom of the fret slots.

If you don’t use the frets why not? I have a mandolin with a scooped florida and the...

    Re: Banjolin Identification and Help

The problem as I see it is that, before you can get it playable again, you have to decide what it was like in the first place.

At first sight, it looks like the “sit-in guts” are missing - i.e....

I bought one of these https://www.sourceaudio.net/programmable-eq.html works OK but the main advantage is that it has lots of buttons and flashy LEDs!

It’s difficult to post a picture - the guitar is buried somewhere in the outer reaches of the first floor! Your description sounds correct except that the saddle is plastic and flat on the top...

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

I’m reminded of the theory that a pianist can only be heard at his/her best when playing at home because every time they...

Re: German 12 string guitar info needed

If it’s the same as my Eko, there’s no glue involved. The screws simply pass through the huge neck block and are the only thing holding the neck in place. Those tuners don’t look original and,...

Re: German 12 string guitar info needed

That heelless neck and its fixing is very much like my old Eko Ranger 12 except that I bought that new over 50 years ago. The pickguard is also much the same shape except that mine is plastic and...
  24. Re: This old Merle Travis song has the most amazing mandolin play

Who’s kidding who! The timbre of the instrument sounds to me like they slowed the tape to half speed when they recorded it - think “The Chipmonks”. We did that with a bowed bass once ‘cos we wanted...

    Re: Three Beginner Questions

Just to add to what the others have said, matt finishes are easier/cheaper to apply but handlng/playing wear will make a matt finish glossy; usually in patches.

    I bought a Collings mandola with a...
