    Re: D'Addrio picks?

It looks like they keep getting backordered -- my wife pre-ordered one that was supposed to be here shortly after my birthday in early January, and now the website is showing "expected March 8." Like...

    Re: Inlay colors

In those colors, I'd be thinking about a dyed maple or colored epoxy. The benefit (or problem, if you will) of epoxy is that it depends on the accuracy of your mortises.

    Google turned this up...

    Re: Tailpiece for Eastman 515

I had the same issue just a few months ago. I contacted Eastman and they shipped me a replacement with a week. Great service, and no extra work on your part. I can’t imagine any tailpiece providing a...

    Re: Who?

When I was primarily a sax player, I got compared to Paul Desmond a couple times (think "Take Five"). I don't sing enough to draw a comparison, and I'm not sure any of my peers know enough mandolin...

    Re: Chris Thile's new pick

My lovely wife pre-ordered one from one of those sites for my birthday. I'll be happy to report back on how much I like it and how I improved 200% overnight.

    Re: Dorrigo Fiddle Tune

I learned an arrangement of it -- this Instagram link should be public:

There's also a David Benedict tune by the same name, which I suggest checking...

Re: post a video of yourself

Iíve been doing 12 Days of Christmas Tunes, on 12 different instruments. MAS? Nah, Iíve only got 5 mandolin-family instruments out of those. Hereís ďSleigh RideĒ on a borrowed e-mando. Merry...

Re: 2020 X-Series -- The new Sorensen AX

I just want to say thanks for using Rocklite so extensively! I'm glad builders are thinking about sustainability and hopefully passing that along to consumers.

I just bought some Rocklite Sundari...

Re: F-4 owned by Norman Blake

Nobodyíll miss my Eastman if they bury me with it but I think some people would be upset if yíall took your F4s or Loars to the grave

Re: F-4 owned by Norman Blake

Thatís one way to look at it. Another way is, Norman isnít getting any younger and he has played and collected a huge number of instruments over the years. You canít keep every instrument forever....

Re: Because of course she is....

Don't think too hard about this. If you use Spotify, you get to listen to music on demand. Then they give you a fun recap of the music you've listened to. I may not have listened to Chris more than...

Re: Because of course she is....

I just checked..... Chris Thile in all his various iterations! Kind of surprising because he wasn't in any of my yearly top songs. But there was a clear swing toward bluegrass and newgrass over the...

Re: Preparing for a Tru-Oil Finish

    (sorry for the accidental hijack)

In my case, it was basically a do-over / afterthought / experiment -- I was decently pleased with my thin shellac finish but ended up wanting a tougher topcoat....

Re: Preparing for a Tru-Oil Finish

Is the Behlenís stain alcohol-based? If so: Whether you spray or hand-rub, youíll have to take care not to smudge the stain. I donít like using water-based dyes in general, but as shellac is my...
  17. Re: Article: Guess the Mandolin Dawg is Playing, Win $100 Gift Ce

I used an astute combo of careful listening, comparing against known recordings (Tone Poems) and blatant guesses. I'm thinking I got 3/10 on purpose and maybe a few more by accident.

    Re: Compton and Newberry show

Had the pleasure of seeing them in Chattanooga a year ago. There were barely a dozen people in attendance, so Joe and Mike turned off the amplification and played fully acoustic. We all squeezed into...

Old reddish / pink glue? (NMC)

My neighbor picked up an older Giannini Craviola steel string flattop for cheap and brought it to me to fix up and make playable. It appears to have suffered from some "hot car syndrome" -- the...

Re: Refinishing the top: pros and cons

I chose a middle-ground option with a 1913 A that had been completely stripped and random hippie sanded. I wanted it to go from nasty dull brown to ďwell lovedĒ pumpkin. I also had to re-color the...
  22. Re: Is there an ideal Radius Setting for mandolins?

I wouldn't say there's one widely accepted standard but I just did some research from "modern" makers and found this interesting:

Northfield talks about their A5 Special: "Fingerboard Material /...

Re: Tenor ukulele for a CBOM player?

I built a StewMac tenor uke kit last year and, for various reasons, it hasn't gotten much play time. I tuned it in "fifths" last night, but with the caveat that the fourth string is still higher than...
