  1. Join us for the Second Ever Zoukology!

Hey everybody out there in CBOM-land! Since the demise of Zoukfest, there has been a dearth of gathering points and focused instructional time for the larger members of the mandolin family,...

Re: What are these bridges called?

I don't know anything about the second, but the first looks something like Herb Taylor's experimental low-tension bridge. He's put together a few of those instruments-at least three to my knowledge,...
  3. Re: Anybody up for a fairly casual CBOM-flavored get-together?

We're aiming to be somewhat smaller in size and scope and a little more causal and intimate than ZoukFest was, at least in our first year. If it seems to be more popular, we might be able to expand...
  4. Re: Anybody up for a fairly casual CBOM-flavored get-together?

I don't see why not. Several of us play the mandola too.
  5. Re: Anybody up for a fairly casual CBOM-flavored get-together?

Hah! Good catch, thanks! It is, indeed, scheduled for 2019. Though I suppose we don't want to rule out the time traveling demographic :).
  6. Anybody up for a fairly casual CBOM-flavored get-together?

Hey there, everybody in ZoukWorld! For the whimsical Zoukophile or the moderately serious Zoukologist, we are planning a somewhat informal extended weekend of fun, frivolity (& learning if we get...
  7. Re: What three pieces of gear have made your gigging life better?

The first thing that comes to mind is a bluetooth page turner for my ipad. I can't even begin to express how frustrating it was trying to turn pages by hand while in the middle of a set

    The next...
  8. Re: Name the top three things that have made you a better Mandoli

By and large, the things that have made me a better mandolinist have also made me a better musician in general. However, I think I can come up with separate lists:

    Mandolinist:
    Obsessively...

Re: My Mando cost more than the car!!!

    Trek 9000 bike-a few hundred.
Old Wave A5-about 5 times the bike
Taylor guitar-about 3 times the bike
von Aue Cello-about 6 times the bike
Strathmore bagpipes-about 3 times the bike

    Yeah.

Re: King of the Fairies - what speed?

I've always played it relatively slowly, but by no means does that mean that you should. Some of the fun of irish music is making your own arrangements, so if you like playing it fast, go for it! ...

    Re: freeware for mac webcam

Yeah, driver free should mean 'plug and play.'
So you say that you have the camera, and it works with skype-is this including sound? (I assume so). What I mean by monitor is the thing that displays...

    Re: freeware for mac webcam

You might want to try the "Photobooth" application if you have it. It would be helpful if we could hear what equipment you have other than a mac mini-what camera, what type of monitor, etc.

    Re: whiskey before breakfast challenge

Bertram, that is indeed M27, good eyes. I took it sometime last year on the Kuiper 61" Telescope when I was bored on an observing trip once waiting for our object to rise. I keep meaning to bring...

    Re: whiskey before breakfast challenge

    Here's my humble submission:

I hope I didn't screw it up too badly, I just learned the tune about an hour ago. I think the second part isn't quite right, but that's what sounded and felt right...

Re: Please help - need expert advice

Well, you can add me to the 'not an expert' crowd, but I was in this situation a while back (about 4-5 years ago). The only thing that got me past that was going to sessions. I learned an...
  18. Re: Anyone going to ZoukFest Irish Music weekend

ARG! I wanted to go so much, but that weekend is the only weekend that I absolutely have to be in Tucson for work. CURSES!

Anyway, let me know how it goes, I'd like to hear what I'm missing.

Re: I'm guessing a late 1922 Floyd Loar

Well, looks like somebody took the plunge. Anybody here the guilty party?

I like how the pick guard is just bolted onto the instrument face. That should make a nice...resonant touch. :)

Danny, it's nice to know you're on the boards here. I'll be back sometime after May 20th, most likely. I'll PM you when I know and maybe we can jam a bit?

    Comparisons

I've been in the market for an Irish Zouk recently, and I've been doing quite a bit of research (in the thread archives here and online in general). In my price range, here are my frontrunners:

    Re: Portable Recorder for Sessions

Well, I decided to go for the Belkin TuneTalk for my iPod for now. I really want to get an H2 when I can scrape the money together (student's budget...), but that'll have to wait for a little while...
