  1. Re: Purchasing a good beginner mandolin in Canada

Hi from Toronto. If you buy a Seagull (personally I wouldn't) or a starter like Epiphone (there are always a few on Kijiji) you will want a better mandolin in a year's time. If you can wait for a...

    Exquisite pair of mandolins, Jim.

Re: question on restoring an old gibson

You're all right. It was more a thought experiment, I think. I'm not actually looking these days for a Gibson. A passing notion on a winter project. I shall truly let it pass, thanks.

    BTW, the...

SBJ, I sent that question to the seller. No response yet. Not in the same city.

Re: question on restoring an old gibson

I haven't seen it in person, John. Here are some pics. It has the original tailpiece, btw. Repaired back crack. I'm just toying with the idea.

question on restoring an old gibson

    Hey all,
I have my eye on an old gibson A that looks like it has had its top replaced with a flat top. If one were to make a new top for it, would it mean having to remove the neck? I imagine so....
  7. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Jim, well, I've written a long (70 page) story, part of a new manuscript of four long stories, that has three brothers--a fiddler, banjo player, guitar player, coming over the border into...
  8. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

While we're at it (and not wanting to start another fiddle thread on the cafe) anyone know any good novels about fiddlers? I've read Paulette Gilles' 'simon the fiddler' and Gregory Spatz's novel. ...
  9. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Just to say how much I'm enjoying learning the fiddle. And learning something new. My 25-year old step son (who plays guitar) decided he wanted to learn with me so I leant him my old fiddle and we...

Thanks for the tip about the podcast, Jim. I was just listening in the car...

Re: Ukulele tuned like a mandolin

I have a little sopranino uke that I bought for 20 bucks on ebay with those strings. It's plinky sounding but when I can't bring a mando with me, I can slip it into my backpack or suitcase and at...

Re: 2nd Mandolin. Ellis? Gibson? Clark? Weber?

May I suggest you check out Pomeroy. There are many sound samples on his site.
  13. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Well, my friend was glad to sell me the fiddle. I spent a happy half hour playing this morning. Glad it's settled. And I had an email from a jamming friend who's been fiddling for a couple of years...
  14. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Thanks for the advice, Jim. I have fiddler friends who get together to work on tunes. Maybe one day when I'm good enough not to ruin it for them, if that day comes. And yes, if for some reason the...
  15. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

So I took the fiddle to my jam last night and a couple of fiddlers tried it out. They both liked it just fine and it sounded great when they played it. Said it had the right sound for the music. ....
  16. Re: Do I round off my bridge or stop touching it?

    I've always rounded mine.
  17. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

DougC, I asked here because I know there are a lot of mandolin players who are also fiddlers. I have enjoyed the responses, not thinking they were expert advice but players' opinions. I wasn't on...
  18. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

One thing I've just noticed is that the neck angle on the fiddle is less than standard. As a result the bridge stands at about 29mm when standard is 33. Does that seem like a problem?
  19. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

I'm hoping one or two fiddlers will be at the jam tonight and can try it, including one who's a luthier. I've done a lot of mandolin and guitar repair and it looks ok to me. I've also googled about...
  20. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

    Nice story, Jim.
  21. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

I posted on that site, Adrian, thanks. And Keith, I did shift the bridge. It could probably use a new one.
  22. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Hi, thanks all. In fact, I put Helicores on it yesterday and they certainly made it sound better. Now this fiddle still belongs to my friend and I believe she's happy to have me play it but I don't...
  23. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Hey all, I lost track of my own thread! Thanks for the advice, all. I'm continuing to improve by leaps and bounds (as one does at the start!). So there was a used Eastman fiddle at the local large...
  24. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Thanks, Barry. I really enjoy reading books on music so I will look that one up.
  25. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Bren, my intention was to play just for myself, probably waltzes and slow tunes, and not jam with it. My friends encouraged me to play in the jam so I have and I think it was a good learning...
