  1. Re: Separation of Neck From Body… What a Bummer

Sadly the joints on the Monterey model are not very deep (mortis and tenon type, straight sides, no dovetail). They didn't always make the tightest fit so again, not the best construction to work...
  2. Re: Gibson side bulging - looking for repair suggestions

I like this "torture rack" design. I've been luck to get realignment on some examples with cauls and clamps but it can be challenging with round or oblong objects. I like John's idea of "splitting...

    Re: Levitch mandolin on CL

It does seem out of proportion.
  5. Re: Finish flaking on corner of fingerboard

Tape off the finished part of the neck and coat the sides of the fretboard with Tru-oil. It should stick and you'll get a shiny surface if you want one.

Re: Classic Bar Frets Refretting HELP

I had an old Martin mandolin project with bar frets that were worn and needed replaced. I took them out and added some wood material to the bottom of the slots and reinstalled them upside down. I...
  7. Re: Finding local buyers in Cafe classifieds

Congratulations Bill, my friend from Ohio showed me pictures of the Stiver and promised to bring it to the next jam. He's a monster on the banjo!

    Re: Random mandolin sightings

It's funny, I saw that episode of Woodsongs recently and was amused by the non-position changing chunk. Funny also about the tuner clipped on the headstock. There is a local group (who also appeared...

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

Mike is right, I've never had trouble selling anything with the name Gibson on it. I'm curious as to the Gibson script on this one, I thought it would have the block style font.

Re: A Bad Day at the Bandsaw

You could throw a cat through that without hitting the sides, ok, a bit of exaggeration. With all the scrolls that have been broken off through the ages, I've often wondered why a partial scroll...

Re: What is or was this?

Gibson fired the maker after he completed this one.

Re: NMC looking for info on a "Wilson" guitar

Here's some info on Wilson guitars:

    Wilson 1968-1970s

Wilson brand: Most of these were made in Japan, by Hiroshi Yairi under the supervision of his father Sadao Yairi.

  14. Re: Looking for information on this mandolin

It looks like a nice carve and scroll work. The wood looks good as well as the headstock vine. It is unusual to see a volute at the base of the headstock but not unheard of, the late Glen Dean Cecil...

    Re: 1920's washburn

It's nice to have a hardshell case with your mandolin, it's kept it in nice shape. Check your bridge position, it normally doesn't sit on the pickguard.
  16. either a little mandolin or really big tailpiece - Ebay

    Re: Eastman MD315 resale value

    Re: Interesting F2 (F4)

This one seemed like it got bid up early and it's not over yet. Is anyone concerned about the crack coming from the lower point on the top?
  19. Interesting early F2 style mandolin on Ebay

On Ebay, from Japan, price seems reasonable. Not sure if additional costs (customs, etc.) are involved:

Re: Is anyone else scared of Bill Monroe?

He scared me into wanting to get better. I got to open for Bill and the best part was him joining us on stage. Now that was a little scary.

    Re: Wooden tailpiece cover

I was missing the original tailpiece cover for this Gibson, I decided to make this wooden (veneer) cover to dress it up a bit. The next owner had a spare original cover for it.

  24. Re: Any others here that started their mandolin/instrument later

I started to study and learn mandolin at age 39, I wished I had started earlier but I was busy playing guitar and bass. Mandolin did take a front seat and I'm still at it 31 years later.
