Re: Is it necessary to repair a crack?

Very close to the string line on all those cracks with one being under the bridge. This is the most vulnerable area due to downward bridge pressure and longitudinal compression. Unless there are...
  3. Re: Looking for black walnut back and sides for F5 build

I have some you can have if you cover shipping, however only book-matched wedges and a neck blank with no curl. Nothing exciting, but with "some" character. The tree was already cut up so I couldnt...

    Re: Filling in the gaps

With the dark wood binding, Im assuming you were intending a lighter or natural color. It doesnt look like thats going to be a good option and a dark burst is not going to show the binding contrast...

Re: First-timer with the Saga kit has questions

Stick to the numbers from reputable plans but be a little on the conservative side [particularly the top] being the stiffness of the wood is unknown. That should guide you and where to thin or not to...

Re: First-timer with the Saga kit has questions

Im trying to understand the #s. .2" is not thin and removing .03" will get you to .17" which is not too thin even in the thickest area of the back [you state .7"']. You should smooth the inside too....

    Re: A5 headstock crack

I've always bought, cut, or laminated neck blanks to be 2" or just under which isn't wide enough to avoid ears however avoids the screws from even accidentally falling on or outside the joint line....

    Re: Handy tool heads up!

I think they may still on some brands being my dog seemed to like the taste of used sandpaper scraps that accidently ended up on the floor. I just always assumed it was an animal glue used.

    Re: Oxidised wood

You might want to do as little as possible to get it strung up and see over a period of time if it holds. Misalignment means less than optimum fit as far as the glue up. Might be quite strong, might...

Re: X bracing vs Tone bars

To add to what Wes posted, you can achieve a "rounded fat bassier" sound with tone bars as well and vice versa. Loars having less bass and sound more mid-range is mostly due to the thickness of the...

    Re: Oxidised wood

The only benefit to using hide glue is its slight advantage in strength if its exposed to heat and easier re-glue if it fails in the future as it is an area that will be under stress. Its a small...
  16. Re: Fingerboard Ivoroid Binding Trouble? Long Post...

How did you "clean it up"? did you sand back to wood again? If not, that could be your problem imo. Leave out the baking soda/water. CA or Duco should work with binding to bare wood.

  22. Re: why do bridges go across? How should they relate to bars? M

I would think the bridge design has structural aspects intended. If smaller [or shorter in length], then downward pressure on the top wouldn't be as dispersed and could indent or cause damage from...

    Re: Mandolin top arch differences?

Id rather not think that way when choosing arch heights. I want plates to do what I want and rather compensate internal volume with a slightly deeper body [rim]. As an alternative to that, I think...

    Re: Mandolin top arch differences?

Yes. As for the ranges of spruce species, I like keeping arch height under 16mm, regardless and more often closer to 15mm and graduate accordingly by how much wood I leave at the end of the day. I...
