Re: Vega bowlback in the Tampa area

I agree, if it was local to me, I'd be checking it out, and probably buying it. It looks worth the price, if it looks as good in person.

    Re: Another mandolin stand question

i'm even later to the party, but I started reading this thread about a week ago and decided to get a stand for using when playing at church. I decided to get one for my mandolins, and another one for...

Re: Funky but pretty mandolin on Ebay

I DO like the two dragons on the back, they are quite nice, but the cracks running through them I don't like so much. But it IS interesting-looking.
  4. Re: Took a huge leap and upgraded to a Northfield A5 Special

I think you did the right thing - play the best mandolin you can afford. I don't think this mandolin will ever hold you back - enjoy, and play it in good health!

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

And just in case more people want one, it says there are 5 available! Wow! :disbelief:

    Re: Regal-Indianapolis- 1902-Ornate

I would probably enjoy it at least $200 worth if not more, but I too doubt I am his target market. Not too worried that I would end up buying it.

    Re: Regal-Indianapolis- 1902-Ornate

I doubt he'd take $200, but that's about what I'd offer (in case I had to spend a lot on repairs/neck reset.)
  8. Re: Four mandolins stolen today from The Mandolin Store

Likely will head to Steubenville or Columbus to pawn them, as they are the nearest fairly large cities. Hopefully they will get them back undamaged!

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

It's pretty enough that I might be willing to go to $200 for it (but not $20.000!) LOL!!

Nice find - looks in good condition.
  11. Re: Looking for my old Weber Custom Elite F. Please help!

Darn! Still hoping you can find it. Still probably in Europe somewhere. Good luck!

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

The poor thing! I agree with the seller that too aggressive string-tightening (or too heavy strings) likely caused the damage, but it would take a lot to get the poor mandolin fixed. Such a shame!

    Re: Blue chip picks

    [QUOTE=soliver;1888590]

Down the road a good piece now, I also have grown to appreciate that different instruments sound better with different picks. That being said, I have 2 BC TAD 60's that I...

Especially for $200! LOL!! I wouldn't even pay that for it as a wall-hanger!
  16. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

I just started reading this thread (and will continue to the end,) but as an older (67 years old) person who started violin at roughly age 60, my significant other gave me a "beginner" violin for...

Re: 2-point Orpheum branded Strad-O-lin on eBay

The $395 one is about 2 hours from me. If it was closer (and I had $$ to spare,) I'd probably go take a look at it, but just semi-retired (2 weeks ago) so not sure how much $$ I will have to play...

    Re: Violin strings on mandolin?

I play both, and IMHO violin strings (at least the kind I buy) are more expensive than mandolin strings, so I'd have to have a good reason to use them.

  20. Re: $500 - $800 price range. What is good? What to avoid?

If you can find one (used) for sale, a Kentucky KM-805 (mine was $600) is a good value, plays better than it cost. But nowhere as good as mid-level instruments (Pava, Collings, Weber.)

    Re: Pick Talk

This is very true, in the thoughts expressed. Mandolins are more sensitive (IMHO) to changes in barometric pressure, humidity, player technique, string taughtness, etc. than guitars (for those of us...

Re: Mandolin case comparison (for A-models)

I have TKL and Superior cases (and like them,) but will keep my eyes open for a deal on a Bobelock case (I like the idea of suspending my Mandolin.) Thanks for a pretty comprehensive review (and I...

    Re: Fratelli Vinaccia 1898

It has some issues, but $61.00, if you couldn't fix it, not a bad price for a wall-hanger.

    Re: Pick comparison

I don't know if the pick sampler is still making rounds (post-Covid,) but if it is, you could get on the list and try a lot of different picks to see what sounds best on your mandolin. Alternatively,...
