    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

I'm not totally sure how playable this one is. It looks like it's seen more than its share of moisture over a long period of time. As far as original goes, I don't have a problem with changed parts....

    Re: MOTS fingerboard, unknown model

Harmony was building some nice instruments back then. They were competing as a musical instrument rather than the commodity they became. I seriously doubt they had anyone on staff that was concerned...
  4. Re: type of mandolins played in Colonial America

I'm old but wasn't yet born in the 1700's but I admire your interest in keeping it real. :)

I'd probably grab a bowlback with no brand name on it just for the look.

    Re: MOTS fingerboard, unknown model

Getting back to the rhinestones, that is simply a trend we have seen for years. Not a whole lot but not unusual. I assume all you needed was a drill, some glue, the stones of the rhine and a steady...

    Re: MOTS fingerboard, unknown model

Made by Harmony in Chicago, it came the factory that way (with the exception of the rhinestones), it's a fairly common body style that was sold with many different levels of trim. I can't see the...

    Re: Flatiron truss rod wrench?

I see several conversations about this over the years without a definitive answer. I'd be tempted to call Bruce Weber at Montana Luthery.

Re: Regal Le Domino Mandolin C.1933

I missed out on owning a Le Domino uke. My step-father owned it and I took the teens Martin uke instead. It was like the dark ones on this site. The original Stewarts.

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

Yeah, well. I didn't stop buying and selling because I was getting beat at the end and I certainly wish I was more familiar with this technology stuff. It simply escapes me.

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

I should point out that neither do I. I have passed on those mandolins over the years just because. I hope whomever is jonesing for it gets it here.

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

You don't need a service or an app to snipe in the last seconds of an auction. You just need to be there with the bid preloaded. I did that as a second job for years. I also watched a mandolin I was...
  14. Re: 1989 Gibson F5-L ‘Custom Shop’ Jim Triggs

You have to understand how the Gibson Custom shop worked in the days of Jim Triggs and Greg Rich.
  15. Re: Stephen Perry updates, shop running again, located N. Va.

I think they just didn't look at the date. I posted because (I'm assuming) Steve lost control of his websites. One is now wrapped in Chinese characters and the other has a warning that it may contain...
  16. Re: Stephen Perry updates, shop running again, located N. Va.

They were worse than dead, they were pointed at compromised sites. I edited his profile to remove them.

Steve hasn't visited this site since October of 2021.
  17. Re: Paul Hostetter's website is available ....

At some point a few months back some system someplace replicated some bad DNS information. It wasn't available in some places but was available elsewhere. This happens now and again. Hopefully Paul's...
  18. Re: 1989 Gibson F5-L ‘Custom Shop’ Jim Triggs

I'd be tempted to give Jim Triggs a call if it was mine.

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

Wide body, case isn't original but you probably won't find another that fits it. The price will go way high because it says Gibson on the headstock.

Ditson also sold instruments made by other builders. Post a picture.

If it has a Martin serial number make sure you compare it to the Martin mandolin serial numbers and not the guitar serial...

    Re: Gibson A-50 (43-CPR 7)

You've got a pretty accurate "appraisal" in message three of this thread. The value in this instrument is the value to your family as an heirloom. You're not going to pay for a child's college with...

    Re: Gibson A-50 (43-CPR 7)

I believe the finish is original as it is mentioned on the hangtag. Stewmac sells replacement Kluson A style tuners with black buttons. I don't know if anyone is selling them with white buttons. A...
