    Re: Taran Springwell

You will be amazed. Mine is from the Class of 2015 and it sounds better every day. I had the pleasure of traveling to Scotland last May to see Rory in his shop. You are in for a great experience...

    Re: Burtenshaw Mandola #6

Lovely, I am happy to see more mandolas being built. I am fortunate to have an excellent one, Collings MT2 that I purchased years ago. I love the sound of the mandola, especially for hymns and...

    Re: Notation to Tablature

Oh, Chris From Tuscon, I forgot one thing. Mandolin orchestra music is notorious for putting a lot of notes on the ledger lines. AS if you don't have enough to learn, just on the staff! Many...

    Re: Notation to Tablature

One crude, but effective way to transcribe would be to purchase the TablEdit program and simply do it in reverse, i.e. put the tab on the lines and the program will put the notes on the staff.

    Re: New Mandola Day!

Congratulations. I don't play mine nearly often enough, and I don't know why. I have a lovely mandola with a great sound. You will love yours, I am sure. Sometimes, I simply enjoy playing...

    Re: Anybody else riding RAGBRAI?

Rode RAGBRAI in 1985 and 1988. Great experience ! Was not playing mandolin at the time. I highly recommend this venture. Iowa is a very interesting state, and you don't realize that until you...

    Re: Midnight on the Water

    Thanks Benny !

Yes, I use TablEdit often and the link came through perfectly. I am going to find a guitar player to duet with me. I will not violate the copyright on this (I assume it is...
  9. Re: Taran "Springwell" mandolin by luthier Rory Dowling

My new Taran "Springwell" mandolin (#4) arrived today. Awesome instrument. Everything said above is absolutely true. Have hardly put it down all day. The strings are settling in nicely. Will...
  10. Re: What's Your Favorite Instrumental-Mandolin Album?

Anything by Simon Mayor. "New Celtic Mandolin" is a favorite of mine. I think they are all available on iTunes or Amazon. No commercial interest to me.

    David and Doug C. (above)

I just realized that the EFT76 and the FT76 are the same !! I didn't notice that. Thanks to Doug C, your point is well taken. The longer scale length does likely...

    Good Afternoon Café Friends:

Just returned from a glorious driving tour of Ireland. We rented a car and drove much of the Wild Atlantic Way from Kerry to Donegal. Incredible scenery. Also...

    Re: Taran Springwell Mandolin

Mr. Gordon: I am one of those that ordered the sycamore. An American builder, Rolf Gerhard of Phoenix Mandolins, has used sycamore on one of his models in the past. I also heard other positive...

  16. Re: Taran "Springwell" mandolin by luthier Rory Dowling

Thanks for the correction, Kevin. I guess that I did not look at the video close enough. I was caught up in the sound of the thing !! Placing an order later today. Enjoyed your video and...
  17. Re: Taran "Springwell" mandolin by luthier Rory Dowling

Very close to putting in an order. Going to sleep on it tonight. I love that open, unique sound for the jigs and reels. I have a fantastic mandolin now, but this style that Mr. Dowling is working...
  18. Re: Calling all Petersen OM/zouk/cittern owners

Yes. Put it there. I even did the unpardonable by putting a strap button in the same location on an "F" style. Guess what, it works better than the strap through the scroll and it doesn't wear the...

Re: Succumbed to MAS: New Weber

    Re: Tabs vs. reading music

I will agree. Start with notation, if you can. You will eventually want to go there anyway. That allows you to pick up any score at a store, on line, or in a book and sit down and play it. TAB is...
