    Re: Who makes custom strings?

Juststrings.com isn't a custom maker, but has a huge variety of strings, worth a look if you haven't already checked it.

Oh dear, I really shouldn't have looked at that. It's really lovely.
  4. Re: IMO - Why red spruce is the loudest top wood

In the violin-making world, these types of discussions have been going on in various forms for a couple hundred years now. Lots of money involved, lots of bright people, lots of skilled craftsmen,...

    Re: Your First Upgrade

Started with a Japanese made bowl back of uncertain origin, and definite sonic limitations that I got in high school. Started really playing a lot after I got out of school. My wife hated it, and...
  6. Re: Single coil magnetic 'strat' pickup problem uneven amplificat

Hmm, the A string probably has the thickest steel core of all the strings, since the A is unwound? Maybe try a different set of strings, with all steel or nickel wraps maybe?

Now how is that a story about a lost pick wound up so wonderful?

    Thank you all.

Re: Bought & I Donít Even Play

On capos- I've played in folk/rock bands where the singer/songwriter favored keys like A-flat and B-flat. It's all about vocal range. A capo helps me with phrasing, since you get more useful...

    Re: Question about glue

Just another vote in favor of HHG, the ability to re-glue joints made with hide glue is a huge advantage for instrument making. With good instruments that will last a long time, the theory is that...

    Re: K&K for mandolin

I opened up the end pin hole on one mandolin, the other has a carpenter jack. I prefer the endpin mount, the carpenter jack feels more clumsy and not as secure. The K&K pickups work great for...

Re: OM accompaniments a la Andy Irvine

Sara Jarosz does a lot of neat accompaniment on OM- listen a bit on youtube, particularly her singing solo with the OM- arpeggio's and repeated riff patterns

    Re: Soundcraft Ui 16 mixer

I have a UI-12 I mix contra dances on. I got if for about $200, and am happy with it, particularly at that price. The pre-amps are better (cleaner) than I would have expected. I did get a...

Re: Eastman 514 vs Eastman 515

If you can't hear the difference between the f and oval, listen to someone else play them, the sound while playing the instrument is different from what is heard across the room.

    Re: Argh...

Play a lot of different amps. Go to a large guitar store, and try a bunch. Plug into your friends amps, the sound you hear in your head may come from an amp you weren't expecting. For years, I...

    Re: LR Baggs radius?

I have the Baggs radius on one mandolin, the K&K twin on another. I like the K&K better, it seems to produce a hotter and cleaner output, pretty close to the sound of the mandolin acoustically,...
  16. Re: the Allan Holdsworth guitar approach on mandolin

Holdsworth definitely had a distinct style. Mike Stern often talks about using scales comprised of two distinct triads, one based on the "standard" harmony plus a second that was often...

Re: Not all Collings hold their value

So, a bit of an experiment coming up here, as Collings prices on new instruments are going up. The OP may well see the used value on his instrument rise as well.

Re: Rawhide pick stroke advice sought

In youtube, you can click on the little gear symbol in the lower right edge of the video and slow it down to 50% or 75% of the normal speed. I find it a big help for learning tunes or techniques.

    Re: Bending Sides

Have you seen the Graham MacDonald book? There are plans in there for simple flat-top mandolins, as well as an oval-hole A.
