    Re: 12 string half-mandocello.

So use 2 sets of GCT-Cello strings & tie Guitar string ball ends onto the ends of them, that way you have a "Nylon Mandophone" aka "Nylomandophone"

    Re: Domra

The 4 string Domra Prima from Ukraine is essentially a 4 string Acoustic Mandolin w/ a Circular Body used in Balalaika Ensembles. It's not related (nor came from) the Dombra because they're tuned &...

    Re: 4 string mandolin?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domra

There isn't anything that says the Domra evolved form the Dombra. The 4 string Russian Domra prima can be thought of as a 4 string Ukrainian Mandolin.
  4. Re: Has anyone tune their mandolin a half step down?

I use ultra-light strings on my Mandolin so I could tune it up a perfect Fourth to CGDA like a Soprano Mandolin (an Octave above a Mandola).

I got that information from a Wikipedia Article that was translated to German by a Harmonica player who's parents died in the Holocaust.

Re: 4- vs 8-string electric mandos

8 String Electric Mandolins usually have ultra-light strings to allow for bends while allowing for tremolo picking. I've converted my acoustic mandolin to play like the electric mandolin w/...

Re: Should a beginner buy electric mandolin?

To make Electric Mandolins more beginner friendly we had to swap the price tags. They're half the size of acoustic mandolins.

    Re: Mandolin: acoustic or electric

Electric Mandolins are easier because they're smaller than acoustic mandolins & to make them work at jam sessions we got portable amps. Also our Acoustic Mandolins aren't Mandolins anymore they're...

For DAEB tuning, just put your capo on fret #2.
  13. Re: 4 string or 8 string that's the question....

The Ukranian Domra Prima is basically a 4 string Acoustic Mandolin & they're loud because the top is cut half as thick.
  14. Re: Can beginners learn on a 4 String Electric Mandolin?

Actually why not convert the Acoustic Mandolin to only 4 strings by cutting the braces down.

You'd need super light strings on the 8 string acoustic but to get more...

    Re: Lighter strings for beginners?

I modified one of my mandolins to sound good w/ ultra-light strings (110R 7.5-28 Gauge) because I actually shaved the soundboard down. I had to cut off the soundboard, shave the braces down, reglue...
