  1. Re: Better tone with a Wooden Tailpiece ?

Thomastic used to have a metal tailpiece. It helped some fiddles and hurt others. Not sure that a wood tailpiece is the answer on a mandolin.

    Re: Advice on mandolin Upgrade

Checkout the Breedlove A's. The American made ones have a radiused fingerboard that is a bit wider than many alternatives in that range. I know a guy with two of them and the both sound very good...
  3. Re: Violinists: What are the mellow/smooth violin strings? (Nmc)

I use jargar mediums. Smooth, dark tone with lots of what I need and like in a string. Tried all of the others over the years and came back to them feeling at home with my fiddle sound.

    Re: Thoughts on keys.

I've played mandolin for many decades as I have other instruments. I found the capo to be a friend on guitar and banjo, but never considered using one on mandolin or fiddle. although Vassar Clements...

    Re: Gibson "F-3"

I never bought a mandolin from Jon Lundberg but I did buy my first good banjo from him just before I headed home from being in the service. It was an interesting little shop.

Re: Just got a tone-gard a couple days ago

I like the feel of the mandolin against my body, I get what you are saying. I have a tone gard that sits on a shelf most of the time. I guess I was playing with obnoxiously loud bluegrass banjos it...
  7. Re: Anyone have work done by Jeff Hostetter?

I knew both Jeff and Amy and when they were working together they brought a 1949 Martin 00-18 back to life for me. Either one is good.

Re: Whats the name of this tune?

Blues permutation is part and parcel of the idiom. It is what you call it and play it as.
  9. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

I've got a student who got a 305 Eastman for Christmas and it always hits me how good it sounds.
  10. Re: Recording King Dirty 30’s mandolin review

They are what I recommend to parents of young students. Nothing better under $400.
  11. Re: Ordered a Northfield F5S, Received a Big Mon Wide Nut by Mist

I don't know that I would complain about getting such an upgrade. Is it your fault someone made a mistake? I ordered a part two weeks ago and the delivery company delivered it somewhere else. The...
  12. Re: Does playing Mandolin Help in learning to play the fiddle?

Playing mandolin helps to understand chords, arpeggios and note locations. But practicing fiddle, especially under the guidance of a good mentor, is the best way to learn fiddle.

    Re: the Brothers Reischman

That guitar and mandolin sound fine together. The playing is as one would expect, mighty fine.
  14. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

If you start banning songs because they reflect the sometimes less than pristine history of our country, then you'd better only play new songs and tunes. But eventually someone will even find them...

    Re: Crossrock Mandolin Cases

I have a TKL case that was real tight at first. But the mandolin now is snug as a bug in a rug. I could even put a tonegard on it and close it.
  16. Re: Feeling mandolins are available for sale again factory direct

I recently bought a mandolin from a friend who is a maker. He did not make it but one of his apprentices did and the attention to detail is evident. I know it was handmade with someone I've known...

    Re: Best Budget Mandolin? Advice.

Recording King makes a Dirty 30's A for $199 that is not only cheap but does not sound bad or play badly. I teach kids and that is what I recommend to their parents who usually bring in these...

  20. Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

When I started playing all mandolins had flat finger boards. I found one with a flat fingerboard a couple of months ago and love it.

Thanks, the tuners on my Weber are very satisfactory and so I am glad to have these to use on a mandolin where the tuners do not thrill me.

    ID tuners on a mandolin

I have a Weber Vintage from 2012 (in my Avatar). The tuning machines have black arms and a friend found a set of tuning machines that look identical on eBay. Can anyone ID these tuners for me?

    Re: Essential Companion

Once I was a fairly good bluegrass fiddler and kept quite busy playing with bands. Anymore I find that mandolin is satisfying and I have little desire to play out. I got a call in the mid-90's to...
