I think this is the 1st video I found and I love listening to Antonio talk. Can't understand a word but brings me back to my youth and paternal grandparents. :mandosmiley:...

I don't know if I should admit this publicly, but I use a manual one from my misbegotten banjo days.
  8. Re: Review: Carlo Mazzaccara Lucia bowlback mandolin

I am happy to share that, for me, the bowlback took zero adaption time and is totally delightful to play. I share this for anyone who is considering their first bowlback! (BTWI posted this same...

    Re: “Free” vrs “metered” tremelo

It depends on what a player's sense of phrasing, what the music, seems to call for. Of course, duo-style passages will require some degree of metering to keep the bass notes synchronized.

    “Free” vrs “metered” tremelo

I’ve searched the threads on this question but cannot locate an answer. Many musicians emphasize using a metronome to develop tremolo technique with emphasis on hearing the first beat in every series...

That's for guitar. It's the seventh fret for mandolin.

Not a fan of the DBT as Glassweb calls those scalloped extensions.

    Re: Another pick grip question

I would't know that detail, being from another world of mandolin...nor how the player actually used the pick with the grip in any picture.

If that is SH, then she controls the pick from the top...

I can't tell you what is right, but since we just covered this (not in depth or anything though) in another thread, there are some basic guidelines, that aren't necessarily going to be true for...

    The new Session King mandolin?

Some of you might have been following the Session King uke thread over in the "4 string/5 string" section. Long story short, one design stood out as a likley Session King Mandolin.

I recently saw the wonderful Irish duo "Ye Vagabonds" in concert, and was taken with the mandolin being played, a very mellow, sweet instrument, expertly played by Brian and Diarmuid McGloinn in the...

If the rest of the frets are of sufficient height and in good shape, a partial refret would be the most sensible approach if the grooved frets can be re-used by either turning them over or shimming...

    Re: Fret Dressing?

All the bar frets that I have pulled out of mandolins are considerably narrower than those used in guitars.
I do not know of anyone who sells bar fret wire any narrower than .045", which is much too...

    Re: Fret Dressing?

Bar frets are a different beast altogether. I can find various bar frets for guitar and they would be the same for the mandolin, but I haven't found them as thin as what is in an old Martin mandolin....

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense to me. On some tunes with a very strong triplet feel for the main phrases (e.g., Maids of Mount Kisco, Toss the Feathers in Em) it feels like each of those...
