Re: Monteleones in the Denver Area?

There is a Grand Artist at Lark Street Music in New Jersey, also a standard Grand Artist and a 10 string at Carter Vintage in Nashville, and an ornate 10 string at Gruhn's. BTW, the Gruhn 10 string...

    Re: Kalamazoo Oriole mandolin

Some of Gibson's electric mandolins came from the factory with brass saddles. Those saddles were cylindrical. But I do not recall seeing a factory original bridge with a brass saddle on any Gibson...

Re: problem with an ebony fret board

I don't know whether or not this applies in the above case, but to pull frets it is necessary to heat them with a soldering iron and use a special pulling tool available from luthiers' supply houses....

    Re: Custom compensated bridge?

If you are using a very light string for your 2nd string, it's tendency to go sharp will be greater. You might try the next gauge up before you start cutting. I would suggest starting with an .017"...

Re: 1909 A4 Gibson Factory Revamped

To answer Mick's question about the neck profile, the replacement is probably more slender than an original. Gibson necks from around 1910 tend to be rather hefty, although they vary. In the mid...

    Re: torrified wood woes

I'll bet that the baking process causes the resins in the wood to boil out towards the surface and clogs the pores, causing multiple problems.

I started to post a couple of Gibson speculations last night, then changed my mind. But since others have opened the door . . .

    Re: torrified wood woes

My personal belief is that, yes, if you bake a piece of wood, it will tend to become more brittle.

I also believe that it is safe to assume that there are good reasons that air dried wood has...

    Octofone

For anyone interested in one of these odd beasts, Retrofret in Brooklyn has just listed one, a bit worn, but playable. NFI.

These make interesting octave mandolins. It's better to string them...

    Re: Bracing f5's

    "Who started x-bracing?"

The earliest mandolin I have seen with X bracing was a May Bell from the '30's. It was an f-hole A model.
I have seen X bracing in Gibson L-7 archtop guitars from the...

    Re: Damaged Martin 2-20 ( I think)

Yes. Martin made carved top oval hole mandolins in styles 15 and 20. The ones I have played were pretty good instruments.
The 20's come up for sale fairly often. Bernunzio has a couple of them...
  19. Re: American flat top/back mandolin - for Italian style playing

I have measured a L & H style C bridge. It is approximately 5/8" high at the center of the bridge. This particular instrument has the longer 13 3/4" scale that is seen on some of these instruments....

    Re: Damaged Martin 2-20 ( I think)

Looks to me like a candidate for a new top. Any problems with the blocks can be addressed in the process of replacing the top.

It might be possible to patch it back together, but . . . by the...

    Re: 1967 Gibson F-5 Custom

Also, be aware that Gibson often added the word "Custom" to standard models during the 1970's, and also re-used serial numbers.
And '70's models are worth quite a bit less.
A quick way to tell the...

    Re: Saddle Fail

Saddles sometimes crack. It doesn't matter whether they are rosewood or ebony, newer or older, cheap or expensive. They crack because there's around 200 lbs. of string tension on a bridge saddle. ...

Re: Quick Gibson A set up question

Can you determine why the action is high?

If the neck is straight, then the action can be lowered by having the top of the bridge shaved down. A $25 job for a competent repairman.

  24. Re: Vega cylinders -- strings for mando, dola, cello?

Keep 'em light. The tops on these instruments are lightly built. A lot of them have been ruined by over-stringing.

I wouldn't go any heavier than 10-14-24-38 for a mandolin, and 12-20-32-46 for...
  25. Re: American flat top/back mandolin - for Italian style playing

As far as the long scale Lyon and Healy mandolins are concerned, they don't sound any different than the short scale ones.
When they shortened the scale length, they also shortened the neck slightly...
