    Re: Why Mandolin?

Levon helm ru cooder and Ian Anderson and to a smaller extent steve Earle and rem. I took it up thinking it was an extra flavour to my guitar. Then I started playing. I then discovered in this order...
  2. Fixed epiphone. Now itís the instrument I always knew it was

Well, I always loved it but it needed work. So I got it done. And here it is.

I took the pick guard off. I never liked the pickup. The tech gave it a fret level, tweaked the truss. Cut the nut...

  4. Re: Anyone trying to play Afropop styles on the mandolin?

No lie I was thinking today about this type of style on the mandolin. It works nicely and now Iím going to have a go too.

    Re: Epiphone MM-50

The elixirs will last a long time. Probably 11 is the best place to start. The bronze ones are good too though.

    Re: Epiphone MM-50

Agree on a good setup. I love epiphone But you need to get the frets dressed. Don’t get new tuners, they’re fine. If they’re a bit sticky, a tiny bit of lubrication will sort that out. Get the frets...

  11. Re: 4 String Electric Mandolin recommended strings?

For my jbovier els, I use guitar strings, elixirs.10-42 set (minus the E and A string) Other people say they have intonation issues but I don’t. They last forever and stay in tune.

    Make sure...

    Re: String change frequency

On my gretsch as little as possible. The tailpiece design is the oNkybthing I donít like. The string hooks are 1/10 mm too short. So I have flatwounds. And theyíve lasted about two years now.

    For...

    Re: Case for mandocaster

I use a tenor ukulels case for mine. I need a towel under the headstock, otherwise it fits perfectly. Mine also came with a soft case, so I use whichever is most appropriate.

    The uke case cost...

    Chop

That might work. Chops should be on the lower strings anyway.

    Re: No motivation

It’s tough. And there are some really great suggestions.

May I suggest doing one of two approaches.

    1) go back to the music that first really excited you - doesn’t matter what it was. Find...
  18. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

    Great question. Terrific responses.

I picked it up around 2005. Around 2008 I realised I could play far more sophisticated music on mandolin than my first love, guitar. Like others, I still love...

  20. Re: How did the "curl" on the mandolin body evolve?

Thatís interesting. That still might make some difference, maybe. Iím now going to grab my mirror and have a look and see if they are hollow or solid.

Re: Heads up for you Mandolinists with Cats

About 2 months ago, my daughter and I found two stray kittens who had been abandoned. Attempts to get them to a welfare shelter failed, so now we have two kittens. One, Marie, is fine, but her...
  22. Re: How did the "curl" on the mandolin body evolve?

I thought wishing to inflame a situation further, do we think the curl adds or the sound? I’ve seen somewhere that it may add a bit of what might be termed compression, with that extra 10cm of air. ...
  23. Re: Sierra Hull playing as half the audience walks away.

About two months ago we found two abandoned kittens. Being white theyíre both deaf. So I can play what I want. They donít care either way.
  24. Re: How did the "curl" on the mandolin body evolve?

As a guitarist I am really a fender guy preferring telecasters. I canít get a good sound out of a Gibson. (This is my flaw not theirs). However the LES Paul is a beautiful instrument. It really is.
