That Loar was found at the San Jose flea market and sold for a 20 dollar bill! That was 5-8 years ago I believe. It's still for sale on gbase for a slightly "elevated" price.

Great stuff, and real fine voiced A-4! That one doesn't have the tubby tone at least from what I can tell through my junk laptop.

They were varnished but some that went out later in the 20's or returned got the spruce up treatment of the lacquer spray.

I'd say it's a wide body A-1 from around 41-42 based on that rarer gold "Gibson" before that they were using white silkscreen "Gibson" on most lower end A's. Also the headstock looks like it is cut...

Looks like your cover is original by the wear and overall look, If original yes indeed rare, some have been re-plated so "don't polish it as it rub off the soft gold" Gibson F-5's got these gold...

Looks to be a deal indeed, I think I paid 2500 for a 1912-13 black top F-2 around 1997! Pretty sweet instruments if an oval hole voice is your thing!

These can be pretty good mandolins, there was one on evilbay 2 weeks ago that didn't sell for 499.99 or BO. Hope that helps.

I have a 1939 H-0 and it has the TL sized-style body but flat back with the back brace. Way different H-O look from the OP's.
