It bounced around the classifieds for a long time… Anyone know what became of it?
I had never played a Collings mandolin before. I've owned Gilchrists, Weber, Nuggets, Stanley, and a Henderson. All sounded different. I just got 2 recent/barely played MT2's
One MT2 is...
This one in the classifieds...

It's over $5k. That's about the most expensive NF I've seen. Where/how would it be made compared to the less expensive...
Purely taste. I've had 2 nuggets. Both great. My favorite high-end mandolin experiences..
As referenced above...there's always the question..is this a "real" nugget?
For some reason I was under the impression that the varnish TOB's were uniform over the entire instrument...not the satin back and sides.

Seller told me back and sides are satin finish...
Do the varnish models have the satin back/sides/neck? Or is it varnish over the entire instrument.
Not a fan of the satin look...
Russ- you had both? Could you tell a difference?..
At a German dealer..asking $11,000 US
Plus the shipping to the US? There were only a couple
varnish made if I recall correctly? Cool mandolin..
We are all susceptible to the placebo effect I suppose. But I do feel the '23 I played is the best sounding mandolin I've ever played.
I got to spend a lot of time with it, alone, A/Bing against...
...nothing I've played. Got to spend a lot of time with an original Loar ('23) for the first time. According to people I respect its a good example of a Loar. I've had several Gils, nuggets,...
I've played a lot of high end mandos from builders chasing the Loar sound and they varied greatly. So I haven't the slightest what a loar is supposed to sound like.
Chris Thile swears by the Feb 18th. '24 batch as the epitome of the Loar sound. Thile says others gravitate toward earlier Loars because they're louder. I've got a number of great mandos right now...
(The originals of course..) ...and been blown away? Unimpressed? Etc.. I've never even seen one..
I'll go back and forth between two for instance, and think I have a clear winner. Then the next day I play them and think nope..other way around. It might come down to coin flip/price/ability to...

I bought a brand new one..then found out I might not have the health for years of breaking it in. Maybe I'll get one that's already been played a lot. Not looking for a wide neck though..which I...
