    Re: James Mandolin Tailpiece

If you want a James tailpiece, then be ready to accept the matte finish "for what it is".

I sense that trying to "polish it up" might make a mess out of things...

    Re: Loar’s Loar!

With "non-Loar" Loar selling prices in the $150k+/- range lately, $250k seems like a pretty steep premium, even with the provenance involved.

Will it really sound $100k better...? ;)

In the field of the study of human intelligence (quite controversial to even mention these days) there's something called the "g factor", more of which can be read about here:...

    OP:

    You didn't specify a price.

That may be a "good-enough" sounding mandolin for, say, $300-400.

Any more than that, and it had better sound pretty good.

  8. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

    OP:

You sound like you have money.
Take a trip to Nashville, visit both Carter's and Gruhn's.
If you can't find something you like between them, you ain't findin' it.
  9. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

    OP:

BEFORE you buy, have you had the opportunity to TRY both models?

Have you played many (any?) Gibson F models previously?

Will you be comfortable with the narrow neck (1 1/16" at the...

    Re: Lighter strings for beginners?

    My opinion only:

Yes, try light gauge strings, and set your action "down" a bit, as you begin to learn. Your fingers need to develop strength and a fretting hand that hurts due to medium strings...

Re: High action - is this fixable?

    1. Check the neck relief. Fret the 4th pair of strings at fret 1 and fret 12, then note how much "free space" is at fret 7. Shouldn't be much more than you can slip a piece of paper through.

    2....

Re: $200 to dress mandolin frets? Ouch!

    I wouldn't pay $200 for a fret "dress".

    Re: Your average $150,000 guitar

That's a very interesting guitar, and the custom work is beautifully done, but I would reckon it would add perhaps 150% of the cost of a "regular" Super 400 (I don't know what an S400 sells for, so...

    Re: basic recording setup

    You need:
    - A USB audio interface with at least 2 XLR inputs (or 4)

    - mic stands and XLR cables
    - CLOSED EAR headphones
