I should have been clearer. I understand your not wanting to drive an hour each way on a regular basis but perhaps you could either attend a jam further away in order to meet folks who might...

Re: Anyone else have no players near them?

I did a quick search and found this coffee house that has a monthly open mic: https://www.sentientbean.com/events/fcpc-open-mic-night-8e9a9-rj4nd-feh8e

Then I did a search for bluegrass in...

    Re: Orchestra

Heady, octave mandolins in the Europe are usually called mandolas and what in North America we call mandola (tuned like a viola) is called alto mandola or even mandoliola.
  4. Re: Lyon & Healy model A - appreciated more every day

I think mine is in the same era as yours, Tim. I will take mine out today and play it—it's been way too long. It's a later short-scale A pro labelled Washburn (not Lyon & Healy). Also, funny is that...

    Re: What kind of Mandolin

I love oddball mandolins but I was going to suggest you replace the banjo tuners. Actually, now that I look at the headstock it is probably way too narrow for any tuners except maybe Pegheds, Wittner...

Re: Odd Gibson A4 on eBay

Here's some photos. I agree that refinish looks like Gibson maybe 50s or 60s.

Re: Anyone else have no players near them?

Daniel, I just checked the map and you and I are actually in the same situation. I am also retired and live one hour from New York City—it looks like you are 1 hour from Savannah. My closest music...
  9. Re: Right-handed fiddle player, left-handed mando player

Very strange. Have you tried playing your fiddle lefty? I am not sure how you are used to stopping the strings for notes using the left hand on the fiddle but you would not do the same on the...
  10. Re: National Mandolin Tailpiece, repair or replace?

Yes, that is what happened to mine. Cracked along the fold in the metal tailpiece.

    Re: What kind of Mandolin

It looks like a mandolin to me and the tailpiece resembles those made in Germany so it is possible that is where this was made. The headstock does not resemble the Italian or American vintage...

    Re: What kind of Mandolin

Post some more pics. We can't even tell if it is a bowlback or a flatback and I have a feeling those may be banjo-style tuners which would be unusual. Show us the side and any details that might give...

For your convenience, here's a link to the Collings mandola case ad.

  19. Re: Open Back / Old Time Banjos - Comparisons to Mando Builders

I started playing old time banjo and fiddle back in the 1970s when there were very few modern banjo shops and most of the players I knew played old/vintage banjos. You can still get a great sounding...
  20. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

It sounds like you loved the Northfield OM. Personally, if you are doing solo work with whatever instrument I would think an mandocello would be less versatile than either a mandola or OM. I would go...

    Re: Orchestra

I played in the New York Mandolin Orchestra for a number of years. When I first started I could read music notation on mandolin rudimentarily but I got somewhat better as time went on. My background...
