Re: Your favorite mandolin tuning tips?

Wow, that story gave me a headache. They do it because SRV did it?

Yes, the Snark tuner will adjust from 430 to 450 I think. It will definitely go to 442, and don't ask me how I know.

Re: Your favorite mandolin tuning tips?

Tune it, play it for a couple of minutes, maybe chop chords, then tune it again, and repeat. Everything changes when the strings warm up.

Wooo, yes. She is getting it done!

And what a band! What other bass player doubles on clawhammer? I mean, besides Mark Schatz?
  4. Re: Recommendations for a great Jazz tenor guitar?

Tiny Grimes, too. Although Tiny played in the chicago tuning.
  5. Re: Unwanted string noises with mandolin and mandola

Sympathetic vibration is a much bigger problem on electric than acoustic instruments. I don't think you need to worry much about it for mandolin, until you plug it in.

    Re: Electric mandolin.

The Godin is an electric mandolin that sounds OK played unplugged, and great plugged. Every Godin iíve owned, three so far, has been of excellent quality. I still own a hollow body electric guitar...
  7. Re: 4-String, Solid Body Electric Mandolin Options

I bought one of the mandocasters that Fender reissued a few years ago. Itís entirely satisfactory and you can probably find a used one. They were built in Asia and pretty cheap.

Re: Best Resources for Chord Sheets?

It's worth spending some time with. Among its other functions, you can print chord charts out of it.

Re: Retirement....Time to take it easy!

I'm sure he is. Nylon strings won't work with magnetic pickups for the same reason that other non-magnetic strings won't work with magnetic pickups.

Re: Retirement....Time to take it easy!

Ya gotta have 3 things: magnetic field, a conductor, and relative motion. If the string were the conductor, where would it be conducting to?

Re: George Frayne (Commander Cody), RIP

Sad news. Never saw the band but did meet Bill Kirchen at a festival in West Virginia a few years ago. He was still murdering the Telecaster.

Re: Speed: Missed Notes and feeling

Mike Compton is the only writer/transcriber i know who puts it down in 2/4, with the 16th note being the basic element. All other fiddle and bg tunes I've seen are written in 4/4. The BG players I've...

Re: New Player - Kentucky KM-150 vs KM-250?

Well, send it back, along with the things you don't need, and get the 252. Arm rests and tone guards are waaay down the road for a beginning player, and the capo is for some other instrument I guess.
