Re: This is not a brag...

That's my favorite part of playing musical instruments. Through a process which is itself fun, you get to build the ability to do something you previously thought impossible. Pretty cool.

    Re: Prettiest Peghead Inlays Ever

I've done some pretty ridiculously complicated peghead inlays. And some simple ones, too.
But this is the my favorite mandolin peghead inlay ever, kudos to Tom and the gang.

    Re: Where Sitka spruce grows

That picture did not show spruce, most likely. They're rotary-cut, so almost certainly plywood tops. Just poor choice of photos on the part of the publisher. Doesn't really detrimentally impact the...
  4. Re: Advice needed for this seam separation

Fair enough, and it is absolutely true that just wicking glue in there would be a worse mess, either way.
  5. Re: Advice needed for this seam separation

Super glue is actually a good glue to use for this repair.
BUT... ONLY after the binding has been made to fit back into the groove. If you just flood it with CA (Super glue), you will make a mess...

    Re: White Stained Mandolins?

Milk paint or Kilz sanded back to show the grain are your main options. There is no white dye, since it by definition adds color to a substrate through a chemical process, and white stain (pigment)...

Re: what is the best selling mandolin.

Well, I guess people can guess. Nobody knows the answer to your question.

To find that out, you'd need one of two things. Either work out a deal with the owner of this site for access to the...

Re: what is the best selling mandolin.

If you look at this link, you will see the best selling "mandolins" on Amazon. It is not going to be a good representation of the entire market, but gives a fair idea of what kinds of instruments...

    Re: Multi-track Recording?

$60 for Reaper is essentially free, I think that's what the poster meant. Especially considering how much value it has. I agree, buy a license, you're getting Neumann quality for MXL prices.

Re: Kay Mandolin A style F holes Mand-8

Regardless of what instrument it is, I was going to comment on the concept of "upgrading an instrument".

Unless something is broken (i.e., tailpiece only holds 6 strings, tuners don't work, bridge...
  11. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I think it's also pretty personal.

The mandolin tone on this track from Jazz Mandolin Project sounds, frankly, pretty awful to me, though I can respect the musicianship which was necessary to...

    Re: New five course mandocello

So when does the Five-Course Mandocello Book come out? :-)

    Classy and sharp.

    Re: Carbon Fiber Mandolin

West System epoxy, if not post cured, creeps at about 115 degrees F. To get performance above that with pretty much any modern epoxy or polyester resin, you have to add energy (heat) during the...

    Re: Tone wood Backs

Brian Dean's Labraid Grand Concert models have a carved spruce back which is about 1.3mm thick.
Kermans have an internal back, spruce as well I believe, which is 2mm thick or so.
    Both of those...

    Re: Tone wood Backs

    Two words:

    Tradition

    Appearance.

I'm personally jonesing for a nice mandola with curly redwood top and back, with curly maple sides and neck. It's gonna happen.
  16. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

Because of the short scale and nature of an emag-pickup electric instrument, an electric mandolin is never going to have the tonal complexity of an acoustic mandolin. Electric guitars have a longer...

Re: If You Don't Perform In Public....

The cost to buy a Red Diamond for me (i.e. two month's worth of my take-home pay) is one month's disposable spending money for some people. No big deal, spend it, get what you want, it won't lose...

    Re: What does OP mean?

TLDR; (too long, didn't read) :-)

IIRC - I have no idea but I'm going to try to sound authoritative and/or have googled some stuff
  19. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

    Fewer than Jim Garber.
  20. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

They are definitely hideous, no question about that...
  21. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I think you might be surprised by the ingenuity of people with limited resources, but whatever.
  22. Re: Tonedexter wavemaps for mando and mic position...

So it sounds like what we need is a... "convolution map"? If that's the right term. I don't know the digital signal processing terms or computer science behind this, but I'm sure it must be...
  23. Re: Ideas re: mostly solid body mandolin w/flat top 3/8" above

I built a travel guitar for my son to bring on a month-long trip overseas. It's less than 1.5" thick, and plenty beefy for anything you might throw at it, or on it. I put it in the suitcase with...

    Re: Carbon Fiber Mandolin

CFRP is over double the density of hardwoods. A solid CF bridge, armrest, etc., in addition to being quite expensive, would be very heavy, indeed. So there would need to be designs made and tested to...
  25. Re: Tonedexter wavemaps for mando and mic position...

Sorry if this is derailing the conversation, but has anyone mis-matched Tonedexter wavemaps?
For example, your buddy has an awesome Gilchrist the tone of which you love. Assuming you're using the...
