Re: Eastman El Rey Video Review

It seems I made an error there! It is listed as a 1 3/32 nut. I believe that makes it a little bit thinner than the standard 1 1/8th in. Strange considering how roomy the fret board feels. My bad on...

Re: Eastman El Rey Video Review

I'm going to jump back in real quick and answer a few more things.

First of all Jim DeSalvo: Here's a longer video that just consists of the mandolin being played:

Re: Eastman El Rey Video Review

I really dug your review as well!

A ton of the initial impact of any instrument is the way that it is set up. That was my complaint about the tuners - they just didn't feel good. But I'm sure if I...

Re: Alex Heflin on the Eastman ER-M mandolin

I intentionally chose a very simple setup to show off the tone of the instrument. I just ran the mandolin straight into a Fishman Loudbox Artist.

The eq was pretty flat and I threw on a small...
  5. Chopin E Minor Prelude Mandolin Arrangement

I'm not a classical musician by any means, but I love Chopin's Op. 28 No. 4 and I arranged it for mandolin a few weeks ago.

I put together a rough recording and a (very) rough sheet music/tab...

    Billy Joel Chord Melody

Hey guys. It's been a while since I regularly posted any sort of video or arrangements, and I finally have had the time again. This is one I put together this week of the Billy Joel tune "Movin Out."...

Awesome to see that transcription! Thanks for doing it Michael!
  9. Re: August Jazz TOM: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Sorry I haven't been posting every month! I've been going through some crazy life changes and it's been hard to have the time.

I recorded this one about a year ago though and I thought it was...

Re: May Jazz tune of the month: Body and Soul

I did a quick take last night! It's a bit of a strange approach. What a beautiful song though.

    Back to Back/Newgrass Music Resources

    Hey guys!

As some of you know I'm working on my PhD at the moment and I'm working on two papers at the moment.

One is on the Jethro/Tiny album Back to Back - I'm comparing their styles of...

Re: March Jazz tune of the month: Soft Winds

Here’s my take on it. This is a real simple rendition, just played the melody and soloed a couple times.

I based the head and form on the Art Blakey recording of the tune, in which the head is...
  13. Re: February Jazz tune of the month: There Will Never Be Another

Thanks for the kind words folks! Glad to hear everyone who participated too!
  14. Re: February Jazz tune of the month: There Will Never Be Another

    Sounds good Pete!

Tried a bit of a chord melody thing with a chorus and a half of solos.

  15. Re: January Jazz tune of the month: Lady Be Good

Moved across the country this week, so I barely had any time, but I put together this quick one-chorus improvised chord melody.

    Here are some options:

    7 x x
    3 2 2
    5 2 7
    x 2 5

You can play it so many ways!

    Re: John Abercrombie Mandolin Interview

Awesome! I heard Abercrombie passed earlier this week, and I was hoping to find something exactly like this.

Thanks for sharing. A great interview and I hadn't heard the Abercrombie/Scofield...
  19. Re: "Hats Off" - A Mandolin/Upright Bass Record Coming Out May 5

I personally really dig it. Redwood has a kind of darker/midrange tone that I love, especially in a jazz context.
  20. Re: "Hats Off" - A Mandolin/Upright Bass Record Coming Out May 5

You nailed it. It is indeed a redwood top.
  21. Re: "Hats Off" - A Mandolin/Upright Bass Record Coming Out May 5

Technically it's only available via digital means (itunes, amazon, etc) as I only printed physical copies for promotional purposes. I have a couple left over though, so if you shoot me a PM or email...

    Re: Amplifier for Mando Strat

I second this. They get a little dirty if you push up the volume, but that can be desirable. The reverb sounds great on them and the EQ is incredibly responsive.

If you don't want to go the tube...
