  1. Re: A friend acquired this Brandt with a broken headstock

Here are some more pictures of my Brandt mandolin. Enlarge the pictures to see the detail.

The tuning plate seems to wrap around the wood in this photo. I don't see evidence of routing.

    The...

Re: Girouard quartet - phase 1

I'll volunteer to be one of the three players! Such a great idea to work with Girouard. What is phase 1? The photo shows a mandolin.
Also hoping for a sound sample soon. Best color for mandolins...

Re: What is a C2 chord?

I am learning from this discussion. It is a good test of my musical education just to follow along. Not sure any of this would have made sense last year.

Re: What is a C2 chord?

I vote for leaving out all thirds! Do I hear a second for the motion?
  7. Re: A friend acquired this Brandt with a broken headstock

I noticed that the neck on mine is painted black. Someone may have worked on this one. (And I'd probably leave the paint off too.)
  8. Re: A friend acquired this Brandt with a broken headstock

I have a deluxe model dated 1899. It needs some work now, but it was a very nice mandolin when it was given to me. I played it for a couple of years before some worry some rib separation developed....
  9. Re: Another phenomenal performance by Sebastiaan de Grebber

Yes indeed. And no sheet music as the style was performed. Amazing. Nice bio of the composer, Giovanni Giovale on the youtube video notes too.

Re: Thomastiks on a Collings MT?

I have TI's on my Collings mandolins and mandola, AND the octave mandolin. Also have tried almost every other brand out there. It comes down to this for me; if you want a bright, punchy sound, like...

Re: Andy Irvine / Paul Brady

What strikes me as so amazing is the tunes within the songs. The accompaniment added with the strings seems more interesting than the song itself. (IMHO of course.) They certainly have a great...

Re: So I guess I'll practice scales some more....

The concern about frets may be indicating that the strings might not be positioned accurately. String height is also affected by the neck angle and it is usually not a problem on expensive...
  13. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

I love Sweeney's photo. It says to me that all one needs is your own music store. I'm getting there with 2 mandolins, 1 mandola, 1 OM, 1 guitar and and 3 violins. I've the opinion that the musical...

Re: The "legitimate classical instrument" thing..

We are only beginning to bridge the gap between the educated and un-educated musicians. (mandolinists among them).

Re: The "legitimate classical instrument" thing..

Music categorization as I see in this discussion and most of the others here is based on the physical instrument. Are there saxophone players lamenting that they are not accepted into the world of...
  16. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

Since you don't have any problem with a long reach, the option for larger instruments is quite appealing. (I have small hands and a guitar is always difficult.) Personally, I would listen to a number...

    Re: Learning to read Rhythm

'Way out there' or 'down to Earth?' Hmmmmm such a problem.

For me it involves one's language and culture and then hard work in learning. Talk is cheap. I'm an expert at that one.
  19. Re: Mandolin playing mindset vs guitar playing mindset

The double course strings gave me a big challenge. I worked on using the pick for quite a while to get control over the sound.

    Re: mandolin with violin music

The Hasse recording is very nice, thanks.

What seems odd to me however is that modern mandolin e.g. not bowl back mandolins, is used with all kinds of duo combinations except violin. The most...

    mandolin with violin music

Are there other examples of duos made up of mandolin and violin? I just love this couple who have great style, (and fun) with their instruments.
