Re: the key of Ab on a 5-string ?

We need new terminology, I guess. The head was not doubled, but tripled? very cool sound.

    Re: Monel strings

Are there any long-time users of monel wrapped strings here? I've found that i prefer the sound of monel over phosphor/bronze. It seems slightly warmer, less zingy.

    Monel is very hard though,...

    Re: Howard and Jethro

This is must have for anyone with ears, not just moandolin players! It's great to hear Howard playing a couple of choruses of Donny Lee on diatonic harp. Who can do that? Nobody. And Jethro is just...

    Re: impulse purchase - non-mando

I think that might be more true if your main exposure to bass players is in bluegrass, where the role is limited. In other styles, jazz especially, bass is if anything often the most difficult...

    Re: impulse purchase - non-mando

Be careful. Double bass can hurt you. A live teacher is a good idea, but there are a few online resources that can help. Katie Thiroux has a beginner course on Discover Double Bass that I expect is...

    Re: impulse purchase - non-mando

Bullet point two, I dispute. That is not my experience, nor the experience of any bassist I know or know of.

Re: Andy Statman's Jazz Mandolin series

I think Improvising Jazz is a good place to start.

Another good one is Coker's Patterns for Jazz. That one will get the chords under your fingers and in your ears.

Re: instrument an offensive weapon (no mando)

For pure aural obnoxiousness, a plain old Tin Whistle has enormous potential.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

It's a beautiful design, isn't it? I've only played a few Fs, so not sure about how comfortable it would be to own one. Should have bought one of John Monteleone's F5s back when he was selling them...

Re: Aria AM900C - Made in Japan

I don't know about the mandolins, but archtop guitars with that brand are know to be excellent. I assume the mandolins are too.

I wonder what he played on that? Sounds like a magnetic pickup, but it doesn't sound like a fender.

Re: Practicing the swing feel for Irish music

I've been listening a lot to Marla Fibish lately, and her reels feature a very pronounced swing, or lilt, to my ears. It's tough to analyze but I think it's more about accent and articulation than...

Re: Whatís after a Kentucky KM-1050?

I compared my new Mike Black A5 to a friend's 25 year old Gilchrist F5. This has to sound like hyperbole, I know, but we both preferred the Black.

Re: Practicing the swing feel for Irish music

That seems not so subtle to me. That's a very pronounced lilt, if you don't like the word swing.

Re: Whatís after a Kentucky KM-1050?

I donít think the where is as important as by who. A custom-made-by-one-man mandolin has a better chance to be a great instrument than one built in a shop or factory. I think. I donít care about the...

I was thumbing through the jazz rack of a local record store, if anyone remembers those, and picked up a David Grisman album, Dawg Jazz on one side, Dawg Grass the other. Before that I was just...
