    Re: National RM1 changes/evolution

My 2005 RM-1 is an early one, flamed maple over walnut. New pricing has climbed in recent years to $3400 new, with used prices following as well (especially those with hot plates!). This one just hit...

    Re: Eastman nut widths

Buy a mandolin with a 1-3/16” nut width.
  4. Re: Why are old Gibson snakeheads worth so much more?

I think it comes down to playability, and the snakehead shape is just a visual cue indicating the mandolin has a number of changes (adjustable bridge, adjustable truss rod, smaller neck profile,...
  5. Re: Any tips on installing loop-end strings?

Replace the tailpiece if not the mandolin. :)) I loved the tone of an old Flatiron pancake but had less positive feelings about the little frets, flat board, non-adjustable bridge, lack of a truss...

    Re: Butch Baldassari Tunes

I can assure you that your poor widow will never appreciate that mandolin as much as I would.

    Re: Butch Baldassari Tunes

I look forward to inheriting that mandolin, Don. Such great woodiness to the tone with no loss of note clarity. That’s how an archtop with f-holes should sound.

    Re: Eastman 305 & 315 blemished

I wasn’t suggesting that you did; rather, I was offering a different perspective on the advice, shared by many, that the OP should save his money and wait. In my opinion and experience, buying used...

    Re: Eastman 305 & 315 blemished

Allow me to be the contrarian. A used mandolin, appropriately depreciated, will give you pleasure in the short term and hold its value while you plot your following purchase in the long term.

    Re: Loving my Flatiron

I believe the #2 is the middle trim level, suggesting that it is top bound (but no rosette), while the MB reflects the maple (birdseye) back and sides.

    Re: Mando repairs near St.Pete?

Yeah, Teak, we were lucky on the southeast coast compared to our neighbors to the west.

Well, there are a couple of mandolas and an octave in there. ;)

Re: Mid Missouri mandolin construction M-0

Actually, the origin was my Gibson snakehead. Was the old F2 your fifth mandolin, Sue? ~o)

Re: Mid Missouri mandolin construction M-0

My first mandolin was a Mid-Missouri M0, and it was a well-constructed, comfortably playable, and good sounding instrument. I liked it so much that I quickly bought another tulip-shaped flattop in...

Is this a typo? I was under the impression that Bill didnít start building mandolins until later.

    Re: Modern Oval Holes

I appreciate this perspective, as I have not been impressed by a handful of hybrid ovals and perhaps have been too quick to make a hasty generalization and write off the possibility altogether.
  25. Re: Varnish finish - Awesome or more trouble than itís worth?

My favorite mandolins have had varnish finishes, but I’m not saying that reason explains why they’re my favorites. Correlation =/= causation. It may just be that my favorite luthiers are building for...
