Re: Better machines give better sustain?

I really must qualify my earlier comment. The 'mic drop' was my judgement of the value of introducing actual science - something that wins almost every argument in my book.

    Rereading it I see how...
  3. Re: Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

    Thank you, Rob.

The response to my email was so fast I thought I'd been struck by lightning...

Just going to settle myself down for a read.

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

I don't know why, but after reading Dave's post above the words "mic drop" popped into my mind...

Re: Rubner tuners on Eastman MD305?

I may well be mistaken, but I had come to believe that the 309 was the version for A style mandos with the tuner button shafts of equal length, while 409 was the F style version with the shafts of...

    Re: Kentucky KM 505 variations?

Can't go wrong with the Eastman or the Kentucky. I've had two Eastman mandos - an MD-504 and an MD-515 - and they were both excellent..

I still own a 2008 Kentucky KM-505. It has the dark finish...

Re: The Loar 600-VS vs Kentucky KM-805

I've played both and personally prefer The Loar. I like the thick necks.

IIRC the 805 has a rosewood fretboard - either that or it's a very light, patchy ebony. I wasn't keen on that. Also, the...
  8. Re: Musicis wise: When do you wish you were born?

    ^ Yup.

I was born when I was born (1960) and I'm more than satisfied with that. Seen plenty of interesting music emerging and learned about lots more from days gone by. It's a great journey and...

Re: Me 'n' Sierra -- Gold Rush

    Ben, you rock!

    Great stuff. Totally enjoyable.

    Well done, mate. :)
  10. Re: Are you stressed out when playing in front of people?

I'll try to bear that in mind, thanks.

I've got a lot to learn, especially about the breathing thing. There's a bit in Dylan/OCMS's 'Wagon Wheel' where I totally forget to breathe! This singing...

    Re: Mandolin Capo Use

Bluegrass is probably the one genre in which I don't think I ever use a capo.

The rest of the time I use one whenever it's convenient for me, and to heck with what anyone else thinks or says about...

  13. Re: The Gator Strut - Mike Marshall & Chris Thile

Pah, it's easy for people like Marshall and Thile to play like that.

But just expose them to kryptonite for a few minutes and they start to play like me...
  14. Re: Are you stressed out when playing in front of people?

I've gigged regularly and frequently with bands and played in many pub sessions. I still get rubber fingers sometimes! It's not as bad as it used to be, and it does improve as time goes by, but I am...

Re: Strange sound inside mandolin neck

It is possible that the truss rod is just completely slack.

If it were mine I would take of the cover and see if the truss rod nut is loose. If it were loose I would tighten a little until I could...

  18. Re: headstock tuner ....leave on or take off during gig/jam

I use Intelli 900s - one each on mando and guitar. The buttons sometimes buzz a little, so I remove the tuner if I notice it buzzing. Otherwise I am just as likely to leave it on - so I don't lose it...

    Re: cumberland bridge

I'm a big fan of CA bridges.

I won't say they've noticeably improved the tone of every mandolin I've put them on, but I'm convinced they have in some cases. They are just totally a top quality...

Re: What do answer when they ask...

    "Mandolin".

It's no big deal. So the people aren't familiar with it. They ask the question and I answer. We all live happily ever after.

Rather that than someone say, "I like the little guitar"...
  21. Re: Does playing Mandolin Help in learning to play the fiddle?

My experience has been different to that of some of my learned friends above, and closer to Paul's.

I found experience of mando tuning, scale length, scale shapes. double stops and arpeggios to be...

Re: Need an amp for a bodhran

You're right, of course; and I like to think I did just that the first 99 times... ;)

Seriously, the key phrase in my post was "time and a place". Drums are great when played well. So are pipes...
