    Re: Uther my cat..

So sorry for your loss. I've been a cat person for decades -- they're special presences in the house.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I think the best meld of reading and ear training rests on flexibility and, frankly, familiarity with the instrument and genre. Certainly in ITM, there are specific phrases that pop up a lot, which...
  3. Re: Do you ever sing the notes of a tune while you play it?

One of the guitarists in our group will occasionally sing the notes when she can't seem to find the tune for one reason or another. She's classically trained and is a trained singer, so it may just...

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I was paper trained on flute and then on recorder so when I taught myself mandolin, it was by reading standard notation. Since I didn't play anything that required improvising, that wasn't a problem....

These are great! thanks for posting!
  7. Re: Newbie question: Mandolin for other instrumentals

You know, a song is meant for the human voice. So any time you play it on an instrument ... it's still the same song. it's just on an instrument. A song played on a guitar is ... a song played on...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

The debate between ear training and reading (either notation or tab) is one often discussed with the same concerns, comments and objections brought up ... but what I haven't seen in this particular...

    Re: ‘Beach’ mandolin

ha! My Eastman is the mandolin I play if I'm going to be plugged in (I put on a bridge mike) but when I was playing it acoustic, I took it everywhere. good choice!

    Re: Your First Upgrade

My first was a Suzuki bowlback and I was perfectly happy with it; put it away for 20 years and when I picked it back up, the neck had warped. That was my first upgrade -- to my strad-o-lin. I got it...

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

I wonder if your teacher only owns one violin. Maybe it's different with fiddle players, but all the fiddlers I know have multiple instruments. They all feel different, they all sound different, and...
  12. Re: My five month progress report, March 32nd

Lovely job. If this is five months, you'll be incredible at a year! Keep playing!
  13. Re: Finished Notation for the Tab Addicted Mandolinsit Now What?

You can look for recorder music -- that's single-line melody and you have a choice of modern or baroque/medieval tunes. Any of the ITM books (including the foin session books) will give you lots of...

Re: Looking for My 1st Mandolin

and you can always try a bowlback. They're relatively cheap, have all the same strings and tuning, you can play anything on them, you just have to find one with a straight neck. And learning how to...

Re: Do people ever change their strings?

I'll be changing mine over this week or so to put on coated strings for the summer and CIAW. I decided to pick up fiddle (sort of) and have a set of strings for that instrument that appears kind of...

    Re: Long term band

Well, I've been playing with my-husband-the-guitar-player for 40 years, so i guess that might count, although we don't often play as a duo. For bands, I've belonged to a community Irish band for 16...

    Re: Bought & I Don’t Even Play

On the other side, i've never used a strap unless i'm standing, and i've only stood up once or twice in more than 20 years of playing. i cross one leg over the other or prop one leg up -- my case,...

    Re: Musician Jokes

there has to be a joke about repeats .... here's another oldie and goodie -- how can you tell there's a ceili band at your door? someone knocks three times and they all come in together.

    Re: Intentionally Imperfect Tuning

iirc, if you deliberately tune the reeds in a box off, it's called a "wet" sound, as opposed to a "dry" sound when they're identical, so other instruments do have a tradition of not tuning exactly on...

    Re: Bought & I Don’t Even Play

    Hey, welcome to our obsession!

Mike Marshall has a very nice YouTube video that tells you the optimum way to hold the mandolin (yes, it's different from guitar) that would be worth looking at. In...

    Re: Looking for a Lesson

Wasn't that part of the first Walmart Mandolin string?

Nope, i just looked through it. I know it was posted on here recently, though. It's the only way I'd have seen it and I did see it.

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

I have a Loar-era Gibson and it stays in its case when I'm not actively playing it. I also have a $49 Rogue which also stays in its case (gig bag) when I'm not playing it. I also roll my car windows...

Re: Do people ever change their strings?

Change them all at the same time, but not all at the same time, if you get my meaning. Replace all 8 strings, but take them off in pairs and replace them before taking off the next pair -- unless you...
