    Re: Off to Scotland

If you do go to Falkirk, you'll be duty-bound to visit the Falkirk Wheel, a modern mechanical and engineering wonder every bit worth a stop.

    Re: Off to Scotland

As no one else has chimed in, for decades the traditional music oasis in Edinburgh has been Sandy Bell's bar. It has live traditional music every night, apparently.

    Re: Off to Scotland

Cafe member Kevin MacLeod, who is a stalwart of the Scottish folk/trad scene, might be able to help. His user name is kmmando and his Facebook page is here

Re: Looking for a GOOD flat top mandolin

If you like the thought of something a little exotic there are always the lovely flat-tops made by Jimmy Moon in Glasgow, Scotland. Very high quality, and inexpensive.

    Re: Robson A style tuners

I've never seen Waverleys, but I do have a set of Robson tuners on an A mandolin, and they are wonderfully engineered. Keith Robson is a real craftsman and a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended.

Re: How to choose a mandolin teacher

If I was an established instructor I think I'd be insulted by the idea of a complete novice player with no musical knowledge somehow thinking he might be able to 'audition' me for a task I could do...

    Re: Beware EVOs

I had EVO gold frets installed on two, totally different instruments. I've never regretted it for a moment, and can't begin to understand how they have had such a negative effect on the OP's mandolin.

Well done Jeremiah. A great resource. There are, of course, other places to find chords, but this might be the simplest to navigate, best laid-out one I have seen.

    Re: Carbon Fiber Mandolin

I would be careful not to concentrate on the c-f element to the extent that you don't take sufficient care with the parts that are not carbon fiber. I speak from experience of a builder who supplied...
  13. Re: Lengthy article on bluegrass in the Guardian (UK)

Alex Orr does a better job of summing it up than I ever could have. Thanks, Alex.
  14. Re: Lengthy article on bluegrass in the Guardian (UK)

Agreed. There is a lot of interesting content, but the premise it tries to build on is quite ridiculous.
  15. Lengthy article on bluegrass in the Guardian (UK)

Interesting article in a publication where a story about bluegrass might come up once every few decades.

It strays into areas that will get the thread closed down very quickly if you insist on...
  16. Oliver Craven on Cy Winstanley's new video shot in Nashville

I'm biased - Cy Winstanley, a New Zealander now living in Nashville, is the son of good friends of mine. As well as touring nationwide as the side man for rising stars of the country/Americana scene,...
  17. Re: How did you feel about your new build Mando?

True, Mary. But that's what happened twice.
  18. Re: How did you feel about your new build Mando?

When my Dad passed away, I decided to put some of the money he left me into a one-off purchase (I knew I would never be able to buy more than one custom-made instrument). I ordered mine from a...

  20. Re: Michael Cleveland Tommy Emmanuel. hold on to something

Neither link worked. Almost certainly something to do with my location.

I'm told 'This video is not available'.

Re: Problems with my first mandolin

It needs to go back to the store. I can't see that doing anything other than getting worse.
  24. Re: Jacobson Nautilus Mandolin #39 - Ziricote and Birdseye

It looks wonderful, and the sound clips are fantastic. Great work, Marty.

Are you getting anywhere with your carbon fiber experiment?
