    Re: Carbon Fiber?

I've played a Rainsong WS1000 guitar for many years (it used to belong to Delaney Bramlett before that). It's not my best guitar in terms of absolute sound, but as a gigging instrument it's hard to...

    Re: Ear Trumpet Mic: Louise

That should work fine; although there are better options than the SM57 around these days. If you want to stick with a Shure dynamic, the Beta57A is a good step up from an SM57. My own choice was a...

Re: Marshall As50D vs Fishman Loudbox Mini

I've owned both, and they are both decent amps. The Marshall is a very old design, and lacks some of the features on the Fishman. The Fishman is lighter and smaller. Overall, Fishman for me.

    Re: Ear Trumpet Microphones

I have a Louise mic, and love it for single mic stuff. I used to use an Audio Technica AT4040, but prefer the Louise. The sound is warmer, and feedback rejection is very good indeed.
  5. Re: What three pieces of gear have made your gigging life better?

    1. 2x RCF Evox 8 PA systems. Light, powerful and a tremendously detailed sound.
    2. DPA 4099 clip on mic for the mandolin, run through an Audio Technica System 10 wireless setup.
    3. Lots of cable...
  6. Re: Audio-Technica 40 Series Microphones, Compared

I've used the 4040 a lot, and I'm impressed with it. Fairly 'neutral' sound to my ears, and works well on stringed instruments and vocals. Pretty quiet for studio use as well. I used to use it live...

    Re: Thomann Ovid mic system

Hi. The guitar clip will work fine, but is a little too long; it can get in the way if you play the instrument with the back edge close to your body. However, it's easy to trim it with a hacksaw...

    Re: Composit Mandolin Question

I was interested in the idea of how a CF mandolin reproduces the effect of a carved top and back. I have a Rainsong CF guitar that sounds fantastic; people pick it up, determined to hate what they...
  9. Re: Tell me about your Gibson A5L mandolin.....

I have a 2005 A5L signed by Danny Roberts. Mine has the Gibson tone in spades. Not quite as punchy as my F5, but that's a real monster. The tailpiece has been replaced with a Price, (I have the...

    Re: small battery amp

Look no further than the Yamaha THR series. THR5A should suit perfectly. I have a THR10c, and it runs everything from acoustic instruments, through to electric guitar amp models and even bass.The...

Re: Best CHEAP mixer for a live band ?

I'll add a recommendation for the Soundcraft Ui12. I bought one for my wife to use with her own PA. She only knows basic stuff about sound reinforcement, but she was up and running after a 10 minute...

    Re: DR Strings; never again

Hi Ivan. The first time this happened I did email DR. And the second time. I was promised replacement sets, which never arrived. The last two occasions were a separate order, and I assume a separate...

    Re: DR Strings; never again

Good suggestions Tobin, but I don't love them enough to go to the trouble. I tried the extra hook thing, and it made no difference. In each case of failure, both E strings went, so that was 8 strings...

    DR Strings; never again

There has been a lot of praise for DR strings on the forum, and I do agree that they are great strings to play and listen to. I won't be buying them again. The last four times I've tried to re-string...

He was the reason I started playing mandolin in the first place. Too many greats gone already this year. RIP Swarb.

    Re: Help Needed with Spaghetti

I run fairly big sound gigs from time to time, and I've had all my xlr cables on reels for years. I also use coloured insulating tape around each end of the cable to tell me how long the cable is....

Re: Small band, small venue equipment

As far as the PA goes, I'd be very tempted to skip a step and go for a small digital mixer, a tablet and a couple of decent powered speakers. Depends on your budget, but digital mixers are dropping...

Re: BDX Go Rack & 2 Condener mics

Bear in mind that the GoRack will need to be between the mixer and the speakers; just plugging condensers into the GoRack and using it as a mini-mixer won't work, as it doesn't provide phantom power....

Re: Roland Mobile Cube for Portable Amp

I've just bought a Yamaha THR10C modelling amp. The acoustic amp model on this is excellent, and at 10w it's a lot louder than I expected. You can edit the patches by hooking it up to a computer too....

    Re: Ear Trumpet Mic: Louise

We are still using our Louise for 'listening audience' gigs, and it's working very well indeed. I've just bought a DBX GoRack for another use, but that's got me thinking about whether we can raise...
