    Re: torrified wood woes

What is interesting is that I keep my OldWaves at a humidity level that never gets below 35-40%, and they seem to do fine. In the summer here in the great upper Midwest, sometimes the high humidity...

    Re: torrified wood woes

As a non-builder, but long time player of stringed instruments, I find this discussion very interesting. I have been at this long enough to have gone through various fads and changes in wood...

Re: Useful Tip For Changing Strings

Well, you can sort of do the same thing by putting one hand in front and one in back of the headstock, and passing the string end through the slot, over the shaft from the front and under from the...

Re: Old Wave Mandoins & Bill Bussmann

I corresponded with Bill back in late July of 2019, and things seemed to be going well. He had some mandos in the build queue. I have missed his posts.

Hey, Bill, give us all a shout!

Re: What does this notation mean?

It means tremolo. The "tremolo top note" means to play the chord, but only tremolo the highest note. So, for the F chord (C-F-A), you would play a downstroke of the C note, F note, A note and then...

Re: What's The One That Got Away?

I feel your pain. Mine was a beautiful early 1930s 000-28 at Gruhn in the mid-1980s. Wonderful condition, and an almost piano-like sound. The price was out of my range. Ended up with a nice 1938...

    Re: Nitrocellulose safe instrument stands

So, is this something you made? I can't say that I've ever seen one for sale.

    Thanks.

    Re: Rubner tuners are back

Agree with the sentiment here. Rubner tuners are well made, look good & work great.

Re: This must be a joke

Price seems a bit high for a neck, pickguard & some braces.

What the heck happened to it?

Oh, wait, it includes a case....
  12. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Thought it did what it was designed to do... Give a good history of the genre, with focus on some of the key figures who made it what it was and is.

Yeah, some of the emphasis could have been...
  13. Re: Electronic tuner: guide, or unquestionable authority?

I pretty much always start with a tuner and then "touch up" the tuning by ear if I am playing solo. If in a group, I will stick with the tuning from the tuner unless something sounds out of whack.

    Re: Eastman mandocello tailpiece blues

Wow, got a reply less than 24 hours later from Eastman. They are sending a replacement tailpiece, which I should get in 1-2 weeks. That's real customer service.

    Thank you Eastman!

Well, the same thing just happened to me. I have what is a virtually unplayed Eastman mandocello (purchased for my wife, who injured her shoulder soon thereafter, and was never able to get her arms...

So, we have been successful! ;);)
  19. Re: My first ( real try ) at learning to play... Bought an Octave

Of course you can. The scale is longer than a mandolin (I think the Eastman is 21" versus 13 7/8" or so for a mandolin), but it's certainly not double a mando, or even as long as a guitar. You will...
