    Re: Compressor?

A compressor brings down the volume peaks, so the dynamic range stays between certain levels.

There are different parameters controlling the volume at which the volume limit kicks in (threshold),...

    Re: Extra long strap?

For all my mandos, mandolas, and a few other instruments, I use the Levy's M19PR mandolin strap. It's simple, only two pieces of leather, greatly adjustable, and available in a variety of colors. One...

    Re: Spring Reverbarator---1901

Two things sprung to mind immediately.

First, the discussions which spring up regularly on electric guitar forums on best ways to damp the "reverb" from installed spring tremolo units....

Re: Steel strings for GDAE, Tenor Uke

The highest-pitched and thinnest string of an electric guitar is typically tuned to E4. A mandolin's highest-pitched course is tuned to E5, an octave above that.

    A normal plain steel string,...

Re: 5ths tuned chord progression source?

Just FYI, I built my own "books" of chords and scales using the following generator:

    https://www.studybass.com/tools/chord-scale-note-printer/

I originally used it for the 6-course CGDAEB...

    Re: new standard guitar tuning

    Interesting!

The Magma website lists the same "GCT-CELLO" string set as having a high G4 instead the high B4 shown on their Reverb listings. If I had to go the Magma route, I'd probably contace...

Re: tenor or new standard tuning

Once I had sorted out how to tune my 12-string mandophone to full fifths, I went to one of those NST guitar circles. I figured that they had been using the tuning for a while, and so they knew how to...
  13. Re: Tenor Guitar Tuning for more Contemporary Music?

I can't claim the following approach is for everybody, but here's what I do:

I watch Youtube guitar instructional videos for regular 6-string tuning.

I click on the gear shape for settings, and...

    Re: I know this may sound crazy, BUT;

I have a Gypsy Magic 10-string built by Walt Kuhlman, 13 3/4" scale length IIRC, which has a body shape similar to the Mid Missouri/Big Muddy mandola shape, but much deeper. It sounds great, and is...

  18. Re: The Dilemma of Motivation, Attention Span, and Practice Regim

Everyone learns differently, but here's some steps I go through.

1: Determine what I want to be able to do.

I wanted to play chord-melody style on mandola.

    2: Figure out the intermediate...

By the way, I'd instrad keep my eyes open for a used mandola from Big Muddy or Mid Missouri (name changed, but same company). Much better playing and sounding for the price.

    Re: Pilgrim Mandolas

I'd always assumed that the Pilgrim mandola was a rebranded Trinity College TM-275, given the identical body, oval soundhole shape and faux-"bone" button on the back at the heel of the neck.
