Thanks F5Loar. So there is at least two batches of 39's with the EA prefix? I know there are the 5's and such with numerical serial #'s also so just like the typical mystery of old Gibson why did...
Didn't win but had to buy the BLACK for sure as my last TAN one got ruined!
I'd lay a HUGE vet that it will be a killer Gary! Love your work brother!
Get one properly set-up and you'll be very happy! Also something of some quality with solid woods so Kentucky-Eastman-The Loar etc...or an old Budget brand depression era model even a 40's Harmony...
That baby has back! I've said some disparaging remarks about Northfields in the past and I used to own "one of the first F-5 traditional serial #50 something that was great-sold to a friend as I had...
That's true I've seen many Gibson mandolins, say cheap 1923-24 A-1's with the expensive Loar style silver plated, engraved pearl button arrowhead or bump end tuners! Well bump end 25 onward!
I meant to say those enclosed Kluson tuners! But stil very nice mandolin! I'd add one of those baby's to my herd! NICE! I'd still rather have the beat old F-5 style shown earlier because I love well...
Check your neck with a straightedge "ruler" to see if its straight? Put it on the fretboard by the nut and in the middle to see if there are any deep gaps? If all is fine your bridge may need...
I'd say late 30's-40's and worth maybe 400 bucks or so? You can get these regularly on evilbay "ebay" I like it, these all have nice tone!
That's another very nice A model, love the whole look! What a great little package with the blocks, and bound F-holes! Is this a early 0's model? I ask because of the tuners?
Yes this Loar has the serious MOJO man! It has the tone and volume in spades! If I had serious cash to spare I'd love to have this one, it blows my mind that this is the only one? Actually you never...
Personally I think is the only Loar that can still fetch serious bucks! I'm talking 200K or so? I think I know who owns it as I seen a youtube video recently "a few years old" of someone playing it...
That is one gorgeous A style! Love the bound F holes and the Pearl? blocks! I love old F-5's with pearl blocks, I think it just has that neat factor granted this is A-5 style but awesome!
Well my 34 Joe Wilson F-5ish mandolin had original tuners on it and I believe they were old A style as well? I don't have it here to check to be sure but I'm 99% positive they were A tuners on that...
That factor and the case is why I said 800 bucks Jeff!
Yes Harmony "Chicago built" And I think its gorgeous! Maybe worth 800 bucks? The case is a higher end case though!
Your right Brad-that slipped my mind the prices some of those Violins and bows bring compared to say a flamed top Les Paul or a Loar! Those are like tinker toys in price comparison!
The more I look at it the more normal it is, finish and construction was well done! It just needs a pickguard:grin:
Can you show us a good photo of the original tuners?
Is that a Mahogany back? And the guard is very thick, is that real shell or just the typical plastic of the period? If its shell I'd buy that in a heartbeat for many quality picks and have a replica...
To me it looks like a very well made mandolin in the 30's style? Has an ebony nut that seen in those years, a thick tortoise type guard that looks 30's! Also the tuners look around that vintage, as...
Well it seems "Rockers" are way more into the old electrics than our very small niche of Loar freaks! And the Rockers have serious cash compared to bluegrassers/country folk? I don't think any Loars...
Those sure are neat looking-love the blue one-yeah man, if it sounds as great as it looks it has it going on and love the lightning bolt type F-holes, very KOOL!
I think its about 250K! Not too bad, but bad enough for a quarter Mil if one doesn't have that cash laying around? I've never heard this Loar but from those who have heard/played it said it has it...
Never played it but knowing Loar his personal mandolin from the early Feb 18th 24 batch I'm sure it isn't no slouch!
Yep the ultimate Loar! But a wee bit pricy!
