Re: 1924 Lloyd Loar at Elderly Instruments

Very cool. I'd love to make a graph that tells this story.

For years I've wanted to unite my passions and document some statistics on this market, but I've never been able to find a source for...

    Re: "Noodling" at Sessions

Thanks, all, for this thread, which has been a fascinating opportunity to learn about the culture of a genre I understand very poorly.

All players when stepping into a session or jam centered...

Re: Monroe Mandolin Camp Abington VA

Absolutely loved this camp. I learned the most I have ever learned at a camp. I think it's especially good for advanced players. I keep dreaming of making it back some day...it's a tough fit for my...

    Mandolin Camp North: Who's going?

As long as this isn't the week I finally get Covid from a student, I'll be at Mandolin Camp North this coming weekend! I can't wait! Who else from the Cafe is going? The instructor list is a-mazing.

    Re: New Hampshire/ Vermont Jams

I'm still in Middlebury, VT, always looking for folks interested in playing bluegrass! So many jams were killed off by Covid. Hoping that some stuff will start back up this summer.

Re: Any jams in southern Vermont?

Hi Brian, nice to meet you! The jam landscape in Vermont is just reformulating now after a year of Covid dormancy. All the jams I know about are quite far north of you. You might have just as much...

    Re: New Chris Thile album

I think of Thile like a very talented 3-star Michelin chef. When you eat at his restaurant, sure, you're going to expect some sea urchin canapés, something with foam, and some kind of molecular...
  11. Re: Need Help with String Choice for Sweaty Hands

I don't have useful advice, but I wanted to post to commiserate. FWIW, I never found a good solution, just accepted the need to change strings often, but as I have gotten older my hands have become...
  12. Re: Old Time Mandolin Workshop with Caleb Klauder

Thanks for the tip! I registered. Back when I had more time before the school year started I took a bunch of private lessons with him, which were *very* helpful. Recommended if you are looking to...

    Re: Mandolin 'dogs'?

Supposedly Tony Rice played an Ovation on the Manzanita album.

More relatedly, my Stiver was a bit of a "dog" in the store when I bought it. It took a couple years of hard beating to open it up....
  14. Re: How do you think of the fretboard - closed patterns or just n

I think in terms of strategies for each key, which includes positions, doubles stops, and open strings. Each key has its own library of "good stuff" on the mandolin.

New tune I wrote, "Ripton Town"

I wrote this tune as an excuse to work on playing in Bb, which allows you to use that nice open G note. I hope you like it! And feel free to suggest a better title :)

I've always used rest strokes, even before knowing there was a name for them, trying my best to mimic my mentor Charley Rappaport's powerful right hand. I've always found they help me dig in and get...

    Re: Keeping a practice journal

I keep a tune spreadsheet, with keys and a rating of my comfort with the tune, which is handy for those jam situations where I don't remember a single tune I know. It also helps me focus my practice...

    Re: Kimble or Duff F5?

I just bought a Duff. Oo-ee, is it good. I bought it from Skip Gorman. I've known that I liked *this particular* mandolin for a long time.

As anyone here knows, there are big differences between...
