I like the Lyon and Healy possibility. I have a “student conservatory” version, with 15 ribs. The Derr has nine, comparable to a lower end instrument(?) My Lyon and Healy has been partially restored...

    Re: Derr mandolin, Toledo

Thanks. I was wondering how late these might have been likely sold. I checked census records and found him listed consistently as a music teacher in Toledo starting in 1903, through 1940. Perhaps he...

    Re: Derr mandolin, Toledo

After you said that, I finally was able to find them online. The tuners aren’t original, but appear to be Grover 304C Sta-Tite Mandolin Tuners in chrome. So there has been some restoration done.

    Derr mandolin, Toledo

A yard sale find in Western Montana, thanks to my mother, got me researching a brand called “Derr.” Unfortunately the inside label is gone, but otherwise it’s intact. It took a while to find the...

I think I first noticed this painting while looking at a video of Ugo Orlandi. It is sitting in the background while he plays. I now see it is the history museum in Zagreb, where the painting lives....

Nature of instrument in 1845-1847 painting

I read somewhere that the painter Vjekoslav Karas was in Rome when he created this painting. Online, the instrument is called a lute, but I believe that comes from either generalization or from the...

I'd also like to publicly thank Michael Reichenbach, who runs Mando Island. His page made me aware of the available mandolin method by Leone.

    Re: 1762 instrument

Got a book with several pics of citterns. I found one on the internet that looks similar to the painting. This was done by Johannes Theodorus Cuypers in 1776:

I didn't mean to hide it. I ended up placing it into the fourth paragraph in the United States section. It worked to give perspective for how big the mandolin had become in the United States by...

    1762 instrument

This picture has been labeled mandolin in the Wikimedia Commons. It was painted in 1762 by Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). I am thinking it may be a mandola, based on its size, and have tentatively...
