Re: Help - Right hand wrist speed question

I think that's exactly what he's getting at.

A YouTube video of a guitar teacher was linked here recently. Unfortunately I remember neither the name of the thread nor that of the guitarist. But...

Re: Thank you Scott and Dan!

I wholeheartedly agree. It was a great decision and much-appreciated good work to do the rollback and get this fantastic forum back online. Thank you.

I, for one, was never unhappy with the old...

    Re: Jethro Tull (unplugged)

I don't think they ever officially stopped using the mandolin. Several band members dabbled throughout their history, although the mandolin was nobody's main instrument.

Re: post a video of yourself

You have all the talent you need, by the sounds of it! And a very nice looking and sounding mandolin.

Re: Quite ill with a trach and a feeding tube

Best news I've had for a long time! Thank you for the update, and best wishes to you and your wife. May the recovery progress and life be pleasant for you both.

    Re: Left hand position

And those are almost exactly Mike Marshall's words from his instructional DVD. Leaving some space between the hand and the back of the mandolin's neck is good practice because it avoids the death...

    Re: Women with Mandolins

That's a good find! Her father, Ced Thorose, seems to be a luthier. You can find him on LinkedIn. A very musical family, it seems! Here's a video of them playing at home:

    Re: Looking for a tune

I play this with Spootiskerry and the Staten Island Hornpipe. Have a look at the Song-a-week social group, where this tune was covered recently.

    Re: Olga Egorova on mandola

Olga Egorova is an absolutely phenomenal player! I like this video, where she makes herself sound like "about five people playing", in the words of a friend of mine.

    Re: Mandolin study

I have an Ibanez M510E. I use it when I need to plug in because my other instruments don't have pickups.

As others have said, it's not a solid wood construction. That's a disadvantage in terms of...

Re: What if I bought the wrong instrument?

That really is tempting. What a beautiful instrument, and judging by the YouTube clips I could find, with a beautiful sound, too.

I think there's some truth to all the opinions voiced here so...

Re: Quite ill with a trach and a feeding tube

Here's a little surprise for you, Dan.

I liked your recent song "Vader Tavern" so much that I learnt and recorded it as a kind of get-well-soon message for you. I don't normally sing that much,...

  17. Re: Avi Avital - The Carnegie Hall Debut Interview

Between Worlds is still one of my favourite mandolin albums. And Avi Avital seems like the sort of guy I'd really like to meet.

  19. Re: Here's why you are an amazing mandolin picker but still dumb

I think this is a great illustration of what the study says and what it doesn't say. The meta-analysis examined a direct causal effect of music training on cognitive ability and concludes, based on...

    Re: Different Plectra

    Hi Daniel!
I don't play electric, but I'm beginning to see (or, rather, hear) that I prefer different picks on different instruments. There's just so much experimentation to be done!

  22. Re: Nordic/Finnish/Swedish folk music recommendation

I'm a big fan of Ale Carr's band Basco. Their recordings are their own contemporary acoustic compositions, but I've seen them play traditional folk too.

Re: Light vs. Medium vs. Heavy Picks

Many bluegrass players will give you that argument in favour of thick picks. Yet there's a reason why not everyone uses thick picks. Some classical or Celtic players find that they can move more...

    Re: Wide neck Mandolins ?

My Fylde mandolin has a wider-than-standard neck, as do all of their Touchstone models. The disadvantage, as Ranald said, is that stretches are more challenging because everything is a bit further...

    Re: 10-year mandolin anniversary

I really like that idea. It may be difficult to organise a whole mandolin-themed vacation, and my wife vetoed a weekend mandolin workshop because I'm needed at home. But visiting a mandolin maker's...
