Learning "The Streets of Laredo" sent me back to an older song called "The Unfortunate Rake"... turns out to have a lot of lyrical similarities to "St. James' Infirmary Blues". So I...

Nice thing about the mizrab is, you can pick on both sides, although it takes a little getting used to.
Does anybody play mandolin with banjo-style fingerpicks? Never thought of it before -- on a whim this afternoon I tried playing my tater-bug with a mizrab (the wire fingerpick used with a sitar) and...
It's like night and day!
Is it common for the mandolin mandolin face to be divided into two planes like this? Moving the bridge back to the crease separating the two planes had an unexpected benefit of making the instrument...
Thanks! Based on this I moved my bridge slightly further away from the nut, and it definitely made an improvement in the tone of my upper frets.
I replaced them with lights... Next time I change strings I will switch to ultra lights.
I finally figured out why my bowl-back mandolin was so hard to keep in tune, and why the upper frets did not play quite right. Apparently the medium-gauge strings that the previous owner used pulled...
Here's one I've been working on a while, that I know from fiddling... This one is great exercise for moving up and down the neck!

BTW (always worth a try) if you like my music, you can get my record from CDBaby! No mandolinny stuff though, just electric guitar. www.cdbaby.com/Artist/TheModestoKid -- several of the tracks you...
Gosh, thanks!
Nope -- cool idea. Thanks! (a slide will first need to be procured, but that shouldn't be difficult :) I've never actually played guitar either with a slide. I ought to try that out...

This weekend (and much of the past week) I am working on a medley of "The Boys of Bluehill" and "Harvest Home" that I like to play on fiddle, trying it out on both mandolin and tzouras. Here is a...

I saw a baglama on reverb.com for like $150 and got itchy clicking finger... But I want to get better at mandolin before I get another instrument. (I'm spending this year learning to play new...
I've been playing a couple of different bowlback instruments lately (mandolin and tzouras) and was wondering about something -- maybe one of you will know. Why are the bowls built with multiple...
