    Re: Attaching pickguard w/ velcro

I agree with your decision and think that having a backup mandolin is a very good thing, but you don't like to practice with the instrument you perform on???

    Re: Chords Guitar to Mandolin

Ralph, I know that you had to walk uphill to and from school;), but I think you understood what dadsaster meant.

Not everybody is playing in a group and can depend on someone else to provide the...

    Re: Finger placement

I would be suspicious of a technique issue.
If you're not already approaching the fingerboard like a fiddle player (with fingers pretty much in line with the strings), spending some time...

Re: What are these bridges called?

So what do these bridges say about all of our discussions about downforces on the bridge and how it relates to volume, tone, etc?

Ha, Ha, Ha!!! He thinks that after you've paid and the box is put on a truck or plane, there's gonna be a guy there who wants to take the time to remeasure the boxes coming through??? The guy's...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

I had the same problem with the colored tabs the first time I used them.

Then I tried: 1) unroll the string completely, 2) hold the loop with my left hand, 3)grasp the extended part of the...

Re: What is this wood figuring called?

Potosimando: My Heiden A looks pretty close to your description. Mine is Sitka according to Michael. Looks almost like whirlpools or swirls over lots of the top, depending on where the carving...

Re: What kind of tuners are these?

Thanks guys. That explains why I haven't seen the old ones. All mine have been on instruments made since 2005.:)

Re: What kind of tuners are these?

Do you have a guess at about when the CNC engraving was started?
  12. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

Perhaps so, but the accent is used on the Campnellastrings website. So there you go. Here's a link to the page showing the "Dué"
  13. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

You can make a é by holding down the alt key while you type 130 on the keypad with 'numlock' activated. Like in Dué.

Re: Get Up John and tuning

I think we discussed once that Skaggs did "Daniel Prayed" using GUJ tuning on the video with Patty Loveless. Sounds great. (his break is at 50 sec.):)

    Re: Gibson sound

Maybe because you think the 'clone' sounds better than the Gibson.

Not all 'clone makers' are trying to duplicate the Gibson sound.
  18. Re: Mandolin players who bought or have played a Waterloo Mandoli

I played one at IBMA yesterday, just for a minute. Honestly, I was surprised at how nice the tone and feel was compared to other flat top mandolins I've played. There was still the woofiness of...
  19. Re: Is there an ideal Radius Setting for mandolins?

In theory, the way to make an ideal compound radius is to note the difference between the splay of the strings on the nut and compare to the splay on the saddle.
You then construct a CONE that has...

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

I put on a new set of the XT D'Addario strings (11-40) yesterday and went out to a jam last night to try them out.

Less than five minutes of the new-string jangly metallic sound that I hate. So...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

Yes. That was my point. More than doubling the usefulness of a string is pretty amazing, if not almost unbelievable.

    Re: Thumb Pick

I believe that Wayne uses the thumbpick and ALSO a fingerpick at least on the index finger. So there's a fingerpick getting the upstrokes.

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

Bumping this thread to ask about the new XT D'Addar. mandolin strings.

How exactly do you measure that the "strings stay in tune 131% better..."
What does that mean exactly? Does better mean...
