Re: Want to learn Jazz mandolin

One of which is a native New Orleans jazz musician, which makes it his folk music.

And like other things, we all have opinions.

The other opinion would be something like "you don't have to know...

Re: Very high notes on a budget instrument

Neither. You need to play and hear the high notes in the musical context they are used.

I have a mandolin that goes past 24 frets, to high A.

I use every note on it.

As you see, you agree with me on this.

    Re: Round picks

BTW, I was at a sewing shop w/ my wife and found a couple of lovely round buttons that seem to work well as picks, at least as well as a round pick can work for me.

    Price?

    a nickel each.

    Re: Round picks

Exactly - but unlike you I do NOT like the tone of a round pick gliding over strings - I like the tone of a pick actually plucking the string.

Then again I do not own archtop Gibson-style...

    Re: Round picks

    Why?

Clarity of tone, precision, better tremolo, etc.

  7. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

    I've read the whole thread.

My one question back - and it has been touched upon - what about the Italians that brought their invention, the mandolin, to America and played Italian folk traditional...

    Re: "Powerful/Loud!"

You can always play softer on a loud instrument.

No amount of hard picking will make a soft instrument heard.

of course I want a loud instrument!

Re: What instrument is the hardest? My experience

That works really well for some folks....but the embouchure is the difference. A basic keyless "Irish" flute would work better for many Boehm flute player. Additionally, the finger stretches for low...

    Re: Picking faster?

    good point

If you can't play a good tremolo, you cannot play a fast moving line.

Re: Classically Trained, wanting to expand

As an Italian and somewhat classically trained mandolinist that has seen and heard many fine Bluegrass players, the best thing you can do is begin listening to lots of Bluegrass and learn to play it...

    Re: Bowlback 101

Thank you for the info on Musikalia; I met Dr. Leone years ago at the NAMM show and he was a kind gentleman.

I'd glad to hear that Musikalia is upping their quality.
  14. Re: Is there an ideal Radius Setting for mandolins?

I honestly do not know the radius, but when I commissioned my Italian flatback from Ernie Fischbach, I had played his other instruments with a flat fingerboard, and wanted a slight radius.

    The...

Re: How do you progress on tenor?

Are you at all interested in jazz tenor banjo?
  16. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

I own my jazz arrogance happily, and admit to being a "card carrying musical elitist".

    Thanks for being civil.
  17. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

    Resentment noted.

I make no apology for my opinion either.

Besides, I'm from New Orleans, learned to play jazz there, and let's say jazz is my folk music.

Miles, Diz, et al wouldn't have...

    Re: Bowlback 101

Take your time, search carefully, try to play a lot of old and new bowlbacks. You can find a lot of good instruments in that price range.
  19. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

    Oh, sorry, I get.

But I grew up in New Orleans, went to school with Branford and Winton, ...took jazz lessons from Ellis.

    so with all respect

"It deified Louis Armstrong. Making him the...

I really liked his playing in episode 3 about 30 minutes in!
  21. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

I though the jazz documentary was quite good! Particularly the focus on Louis Armstrong.

You guys that couldn't get into it - do you even like to listen to jazz? or was it the show itself that...
  22. Re: Bocolo Bouzouki. Has anyone heard of this brand of bouzouki?

That looks quite like a Greek-style bouzouki I owned in the 1980's that was made in Italy. The break on the top is not typical for Greek made bouzoukis. If the action is good it should be worth at...

Re: Greek Baglama with "KF" on Headstock

Yours looks like a typical decent baglama. It's tuned DAD and plays chords and melody lines in traditional rebetiko and laika music. (more of an Athens/Pireas instrument than a Cypriot one).

    You...
