    Re: Silver vs. Nickel James Tailpiece?

    As much as anyone wants to talk about improving the sound they really don't. No tailpiece does. They do make string changes easier and they are a work of art.

    Re: Left-Handed Players

    As someone who is 'mostly' a lefty I think it is simply what was presented to us when we started playing. We learned to do it that way. In almost all cases it involved strumming with the right hand...

    Re: Natural talent vs practice

    You can always find a reason to not do something if you're so inclined. Just putting that out there.

    I think the idea of talent (as opposed to dogged determination) strikes at our concept of...

    Re: Natural talent vs practice

    There is talent (which I have none of);
    There is practice which leads to ability (which I have some of);
    but in my mind the most important aspect of music is love. If you don't love music your...
  5. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

    Yes, I agree with what everyone is saying on here about check it out yourself, etc. If you're willing to pay $15k or whatever the price is for a MM, you can shell out a few hundred bucks for a plane...
  6. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

    At that price point may as well fly to Nashville and play mandolins til you find the one you can't put down. Price wise that is not that much compared to how much you are investing in the instrument....

    Re: "Powerful/Loud!"

    Being heard is necessary but not sufficient. And its half full half empty thing. Are you not loud enough or are the others playing too loud. .. Or, get a resonator and just blast them.

    Thanks for the interest in this, my first, tune! Too set the record straight, here's the "official" chart including tab, which illustrates the fact that I use my pinky on the 7th fret in bars 3 & 4...

    Re: Get Up John and tuning

    I think we discussed once that Skaggs did "Daniel Prayed" using GUJ tuning on the video with Patty Loveless. Sounds great. (his break is at 50 sec.):)

    Re: Gibson destroys hundreds of Firebird X's

    That was no leak. You don't gimmick up the destroying of inventory by using a piece of heavy equipment unless you want the publicity.
  13. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

    In Honor of Mr Bill Monroe's 73987 (celebrating it's 96th birthday today!), I think this is an image worth sharing.

  16. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

    Indeed. Responding specifically to specific public words and actions on the part of Mark Agnesi is not an ad hominem attack.
  17. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

    There's a big difference between a copy and a counterfeit. (A point which appears to be lost on Mark Agnesi in his role as Gibson spokesman.)

    I agree that counterfeit instruments - instruments...
  18. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

    Bill McCall, it needs to be said that no individual builder tried to copy a 60's, or 70's Gibson. They tried copying early 20's Gibsons because Gibson wasn't doing it.
  19. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

    I primarily agree with the prior posts here which emphasize the untenable act of forging the 'Gibson' name and passing off forgeries and...
