Re: Unicorn sighting (Halsey F-5 on youtube)?

Thanks, that was fun. Two of the members are friends and are great fun to play music with.

    Re: Postal Mandolin

I think that is innovative for the door plate, and looks nice. No problem here.

    Re: Mandolin Gender

I don't feel my mandolins have a gender, they are mandolins and I call them by name, the Brentrup, the Unicorn, the Gibson, etc.

Re: Thornward- Lyon & Healy Bowl Back 1905

Thornward was a brand made for Montgomery Wards, by Lyon and Healy. I have a very nice guitar that is a Thornward. Mine is somewhere around the 1900's-1910's.

Re: Tell me of your love affair with an A style...

I have had one F style mandolin after a few A styles. I prefer A style mandolins and it's all I have, be it ff hole or oval hole. I have both.

    Re: Upgrading or authenticity

There are several ways to put a pickup on a mandolin without changing it's original condition, or it's acoustic sound. If you are concerned with originality it can be retained and still have a pickup.

Re: Bringing a Mandolin on a long trip

I take the mandolin I like playing everywhere. Does it show, yes. I play gigs in hot humid weather and the varnish finish shows it's wear. The finish is worn off the neck along with most of the...

Re: Bringing a Mandolin on a long trip

With a strap on the case you can carry it on your shoulder and still carry a child or two. All my cases have improvised strap on them, I never carry a case with my hands.

Re: Tuner Pedal vs. Headstock Tuner

I have one too, and and A 436, but I haven't used them in years. Maybe decades.

Re: Washburn style c number 1739

A more accurate way to measure the scale length is to measure from the nut to the 12th fret and double the measurement. The bridge will be set a little past the scale length to intonate.
  11. Re: Gibson side bulging - looking for repair suggestions

I am thinking rcc56 was assuming you want to fix it, in which case you don't want to make it worse and be harder to fix.

If you like the oval hole sound my '22 Gibson is about as good as it gets.

    Re: Making Mandolin Picks

If you use a belt sander be careful of how long you sand, depending on material. For instance bone will get brittle if it gets too hot. I have made picks from Tagua nuts, fossilized Ivory, and bone...

Re: K&K Twin vs. Schertler Resocoil

I have had both and prefer the K&K. The Schertler fed back to easily, and the sound I am getting out of my K&K is better to my ear. Some will disagree I am sure.

Re: Tuner Pedal vs. Headstock Tuner

The Unitune doesn't have the 6 guitar string settings to annoy you is all. Otherwise it is the same tuner.

Re: Tuner Pedal vs. Headstock Tuner

I prefer the Unitune to the Polytune, but I have both. Battery life is exceptional, and accurate tuning right there with my Peterson.

Re: Neck shape/feel: "V" vs rounded

I have a rounded, nice C shape that I love, I also have a V shape that I play daily. I think you can get used to whatever you spend time on. Some love the V shape, some don't. I find both...
  20. Re: Have Fishman Piezo Bridge Pickups Substantially changed since

Old tube amps have a high input impedance that piezos need. It's not the 1 meg that a preamp has, but it is usually 100k. Much better than a PA, so they sound decent.

Re: Effects of Heavier E and A String Courses

I use GHS and they come with a 16 so the only really added stress to a normal set is the 11.5. My set is 11 16 27 and 41. I wouldn't worry.

    Re: Picks for arthritis

They make flat picks with the thumb strap like a thumb pick. I have also found that a thinner pick won't transfer the attack to your thumb as much. Something like a .73 works fine, it has a little...
  25. Re: Stroboclip Tuner TL;DR Tale told by an idiot*, Part 765:
