    I really like Elixir nano web strings on both my guitar and mandolins. Don't know if they make a light gauge. They seem to last a really long time.

    I wonder if you can cut a small piece of brass that you can glue or screw into the wood. I don't know how to draw one but.....______| then the hook on top of the vertical line. Good luck..

    When I started mandolin I bought just what I could afford knowing I'd probably want to upgrade in the future. I did and don't regret starting with a real cheapo. Good luck and happy pickin'.
