Re: When a mandolin tunes itself

You may be wrongly assuming that the other instruments you’re playing along with are perfectly in tune with each other. I had a feeling that I was out of tune with the session a couple of weeks ago....

  3. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

I’m not suggesting that it was anything to do with Strad. just that putting erroneous labels in something isn’t a modern phenomenon. My late friend was at college when he bought it and his then tutor...
  4. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

A now deceased fiddler I used to play with had a violin with an ancient “Stradivarius” label. It apparently hailed from circa. 1740.

Re: How often should my mandolin need to be tuned?

I believe electric guitarists sometimes spend good money on devices designed to make their instruments sound out of tune. All things considered, I suspect that the average audience would never notice.
  6. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

If London is only an hour away, Dornoch could be a 1000 mile round trip for you!

Working out the date and exact place of manufacturebof mine was difficult - I think they’re still based in Bend...
  7. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

Both of those are known makes/models and relatively common so you should be able to compare prices.

I bought a US built Breedlove (I don’t think the one advertised is) in the same auction as I...

Re: How often should my mandolin need to be tuned?

If it sounds out of tune, check the A strings first. For some reason unbeknown to mankind, A strings will flatly (no pun intended) refuse to stay in tune.

I too come from the heady days before the...
  9. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

You never know, someone might chip in. It’s a very common shape. Apart from the bridge, ornamentation and slotted headstock (best of luck with that!) it’s identical to the Fylde hanging on the wall...
  10. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

No idea of the maker but, providing it’s not a dog or it’s falling apart, what else could you get - with a case - for £200? Don’t expect to be able to play bluegrass on it though!

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

Apart from the price, the advert is actually misleading insofar as it should say “Applause by Ovation” rather than “Ovation by Applause”. A real Ovation has recently popped up at auction in the UK...

    Re: Strad-O-Lin Social Group

Hadn’t realised that there were two routes to the social groups. I’ve always used Mike’s method but Bill’s is one click fewer!
  13. Re: Abbreviated pick guard doesn’t need a brace?

I’m no luthier but it sounds fine to me. I have two Kimbles (A and F), both have abbreviated pickguards and neither have a brace. They are fitted to the edge of the neck by a pin and a screw. I...

    Re: Extra long strap?

Don’t know what it’s like in the US (or Yorkshire!) but charity shop belts in this part of the world tend to be a bit short - especially if you want a long strap.

    Welcome to the forum.

See here - http://www.lutherie.net/tuner.maintenance.html or fit a set of StewMac Golden Age “Restoration” tuners. The “relic” versions don’t look that bad. They are possibly...

I seem to remember that Trevor at TAMCO had one (if not more) in stock several years ago but I never got to play one.

    Re: Late 30s Mahogany Harmony

I have a mandolin which was almost as bad until I removed the pickguard - strangely, the guard itself doesn’t look too bad. It’s an Ibanez from 1976 so “cellulite” didn’t cease in the 1960s.
