Re: Very high notes on a budget instrument

Most inexpensive mandolins start to give up as you go past the 12th fret.
My decent but lesser mandolin starts to get really plinky at 12th fret, and then starts to fail to give any sort of useful...

Re: What is this wood figuring called?

Since posting this I have been reading a bit about it elsewhere.
Apparently engelmann spruce has particularly long medullary rays, which are what makes this pattern figuring.
    They show up in...

Re: What is this wood figuring called?

The mando in my question is also a Northfield Artist, so could be from the same wood stock.
That one in your picture is a 5 bar Artist model, and mine is too.
    Very cool.

    Nice figuring.
The mando in question is Engelmann topped too.

    Re: its only a Dollar..

On craigslist you have to put a price, so sometimes if people want offers made, or they are selling a group of instruments with separate prices, they put a dollar, just to hold the price spot.

Re: What is this wood figuring called?

I got a shot from a different angle and upped the contrast for a better view of the grain.
The question has been answered, so this is just for reference for future viewers.

Re: Refinishing the top: pros and cons

I love the look of a beat up Ajr.
It is one of my favorite mandolins for looks.
It is simple and just meant to be played.

I say keep the general beat up appeal, but do a good clean and then...

Re: What is this wood figuring called?

From the fact that the wavy sinking radiates from under the bridge foot, I assume they did that on purpose.
I think if I had that piece of wood with that radiating pattern, I would try to get it...

What is this wood figuring called?

    Hey all,

Just wondering if there is a name for this kind of wood figuring (see Photo)?
Im talking about the wavey grain pattern, radiating out from the bridge base.
    It continues around the F...
  11. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

I would try Straight Up Strings Mediums.
They have a balanced tone across the courses.
I think the E and G are slightly heavier relative to the other two courses.
Might help with your E string. ...

Re: What instrument is the hardest? My experience

    For me, Sitar and Fiddle.

Fiddle for the bowing and fretless fingerboard.

Sitar is hard on several levels.
Sitar is technically difficult to play because you play mostly horizontally across...

    Hideous... IMHO
  14. Re: One Gibson L-model I have never seen before

I think it has to be the Gibson ES-120T Thinline.
I can't think of another that has that goofy pickguard running all the way down the top.

    Re: Gryphon is 50

Gryphon is a very cool store.
They always have a nice selection of mandolins.
I always go down when I see they have something I really need to try out, like an Ellis, or a new Northfield model. ...

  17. Re: my goodness, that Ellis F in the classifieds, geewhizzzz!!

Yeah, that is a lovely thing.
I think my first big money mandolin is going to be an Ellis.
    They are just beautiful mandolins.
  18. Re: Cool mandolins at Schoenberg in Tiburon, Ca

Unfortunately I don’t remember the specifics of that fern.
I think I remember it being mid 30s, but could be wrong.
  19. Re: Cool mandolins at Schoenberg in Tiburon, Ca

    Daryl,
I think the Altman and Dudenbostel A style were both around 10K.
    The Giacomel was around 12K.
The Gilchrist oval hole was 13K
    The Kimble was around 5K.

    I don’t remember what the...
  20. Cool mandolins at Schoenberg in Tiburon, Ca

    Hey All,

Stopped by Schoenberg in Tiburon, Ca today to play some mandolins.
They had an amazing assortment hanging up, as usual. (See photos).

    They had a Dudenbostel, a Giacomel, a...

    Re: Easy strap lock

Yes, my strap is softer leather and the hole is just getting a bit open.
I love the strap, so this is a good compromise.
I should probably do the tie to the tailpiece too.

    They are available...

    Easy strap lock

    Hey All,

The strap has popped off the back of my mandolin enough times to make me worry about it while I am playing. I hate thinking about it, and hate the thought of my nice mandolin smashing to...

Re: My KM 1050 vs other Mandos

I would try straight medium strings, like D'Addario J74
Sometimes heavier strings can dampen the tone.
Some mandos get louder with heavier strings, but some get choked up a bit.

    Also make sure...

In terms of getting a clear view of the actual tone of the instrument, you are correct.

    I love Schoenberg...

    Re: I'm buying a Mandolin

I would stay away from the Washburns etc.
    Go for Kentucky or Eastman.

There are a lot of Eastman mandos in the classifieds at the moment.
There is an MD315 for $500, which is the one you were...
