    Re: Classical Mandolin

I play classical guitar AND mandolin - and some violin and cello.

Unless the classical guitar teacher actually plays mandolin - or at least also plays plectrum steel string guitar - he will only...
  2. Re: Top classical pieces every mandolin player should know

    THIS!

One will never get past the superficial in classical music without knowing how to read standard notation. It is the key to the repertoire.

    Re: Improvising

That sounds good - but wouldn't it help if the teachers also taught some jazz tunes by ear?
  4. Re: Starting to study mandolin, where to start?

Classical is mostly learned from traditional method books, a good teacher, playing in a mandolin orchestra, etc.

Bluegrass is largely an ear tradition, although there are plenty of staff notation...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

We used to play collective group improv "New Orleans style" with strings. It may not be common but it can be done!

Point taken about Gypsy jazz....it is more of a soloists' style.

    I guess I...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

As a native New Orleans string player, this guy is wrong.

You can play jazz with a string band!

Perfect example, the 6 7/8 String Band.

There used to be others in the past, the 6 7/8...

    Re: Those other chords?

Thanks, I was not sure what you meant.

I get that - it is easier to say 3-6-2-5 in practical band situations rather than the correct-but-complex version. :)

I make a point about this when...

    Re: Those other chords?

    Glad to share.

BTW, classical music had those " frequent movement between tonal centers" before any popular music did, including jazz. As you point out, the majority of folk and much pop music...

    Re: Those other chords?

That depends on the modes. So far we are talking about basic major scales, or the Ionian mode. Secondary dominants are not as related to the various diatonic and synthetic modes as they are to...

    Re: Those other chords?

The attachment mentions secondary dominants; these are not "weird" chords but are the essential chords that connect key centers.

Plus, jazz is not another special or unique case, it uses chords...

Re: Very high notes on a budget instrument

Neither. You need to play and hear the high notes in the musical context they are used.

I have a mandolin that goes past 24 frets, to high A.

I use every note on it.

BTW, I was at a sewing shop w/ my wife and found a couple of lovely round buttons that seem to work well as picks, at least as well as a round pick can work for me.

    Price?

Exactly - but unlike you I do NOT like the tone of a round pick gliding over strings - I like the tone of a pick actually plucking the string.

Then again I do not own archtop Gibson-style...
