    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

I've used T-I's a lot. Starks for arch-top and Mediums for flat-top. If you find the gauges, you'll see that the Starks are less gauge than the J-74's.

I'm still seeking the answer for my octave...

    Hi JB!

Exciting mandolin news! I saw the original post and checked the link. Looked like an interesting purchase to me also! Wasn't a bidder. So glad you found it and it's becoming a fun...

    Re: Octave Mandolin advice

just get the Eastman MDO-305 and learn your grips. I really liked going to the D'Adderio Mandola string set. I still keep the octave tuning; however.

I'm newly retired and play mostly for the...

    Re: Nut width..

I think a Loar F5 is narrow and I think a teens paddle-head as wide. The former about an inch and the latter a 1/4" more.

I like the paddle head and I like 1-3/16ths.

    I feel cramped on the...

    Re: Octave Recommendations?

yeah, I needed about half of the first fret to make it!

    Thanks for that followup!

I actually have an email into Thomatik and hope to learn more?

I thought about that, but wasn't sure how that'd go? I'da had the length if it wasn't for the silk.

Re: Flat Tops, Waterloo and others

Thanks for the report. Shame too! It'd be fun to know that there is a good, simple mandolin for folks to enjoy. Something all wood and sub-$300 bucks!

    Re: Octave Recommendations?

Well, the D string made it to the string post of my mdo-305, but the G strings were too short to make the distance!

I'd love to have T-I's on my octave; but. . .

I'm a big fan using T-I's on my mandolin. I'll see if they fit. They just arrived, but it's too nice outside and I was playing instead!

Re: Gibson A-4, Teens vs 20s

snake heads sound different than paddle heads.

I kept the latter, but the former costs more.

Cache does play into this; however. Be guided by your ears and fingers!

Re: Flat Tops, Waterloo and others

well, I love my Flatiron, that's for sure.

That said, I'm very interested in the bottom of the options - the Kentucky pancake. Anybody played one of these? At $250, I've been tempted!

    Re: Tax Day Cometh

according to your question, the answer has always been, "Yes." Whether the retailer withheld it never meant one didn't, "Have," to, that is. . .

  24. Re: OM closed position fingering and pinky and FFCP

I mostly play Celtic, Old-Time and a bit of classical on my mandolin. I've been stuck at mediocre for my entire life and quite content. I used to go to old-time jams and I played a bit in a duet...

worm-over tuners, maple back, unlikely to come with a case.
