    Re: Girouard Ensemble A-5 opinions.

I'm biased as I own a Girouard Concert model meself and couldn't be happier with it - working with Max and Lauri was fantastic from start to finish, they're making stunning instruments that both look...

Re: Tuners - replace or repair advice

Yeah, I was pretty annoyed when I got the mandolin back and found a wee plastic bag in the storage compartment with the new bushings still in it, and then realized that the luthier hadn't swapped...

Re: Tuners - replace or repair advice

I have the Rubners as they're stock on Girouard mandolins and really like them - super smooth and hold tune well. That said I had the tuners on my old MT-O replaced with Rubners and they didn't feel...
  4. Re: Suggestions for the Solution of Limited Options Problem

What's your budget? You'll probably get more relevant recommendations if folks know how much you want to spend on a mandolin.

    Sounds gorgeous, congratulations!
  6. Re: Use of D'addario Humidpaks for mandolins

I've used the Boveda Humidipaks (same thing as D'Addario as Boveda makes the D'Addario ones) in both my guitar and mandolin cases for about 4 years now, never had any problems with leakage.

    Re: Pick Question

Define "thin" here - are we talking .70mm or something like 1.0mm, which would be "thin" in comparison to a 1.5mm or 2.0mm pick? For years my go to pick has been a Blue Chip TPR35 or their Kenny...

    Re: Hornpipe rhythm

As it's dance music looking up videos of set dancers dancing hornpipe sets vs. reel sets might help highlight where the emphasis goes.
  10. Re: Skill Progression/Benchmarks, MAS and Instrument Upgrades

I'd been playing guitar for at least 25 years before picking up the mandolin (started guitar age 11), and also had been playing the tenor banjo for 2 years. Because I always bought second hand...
  11. Re: The sheer inexpressible delight of stumbling across a new tun

You are not over reacting sir, that is a cracker of a tune! Cheers for posting it!
  12. Re: The sheer inexpressible delight of stumbling across a new tun

I've been really enjoying playing a hornpipe called "The Rose of Drishane" - I follow Harry Bradley's "The Errant Elbow" page on Facebook and he posted this tune awhile back:...

Re: Home Recording Setup for Total Beginner?

I second the vote for either a Zoom hand held recorder or the Spire. I have used both. Currently I have a Zoom H6 that I picked up for a great price second hand and the sound quality is great from...

Re: Larger frets for 1920 Gibson A-4

Go for the bigger fretwire - that's what I did when I had my A-jr and it needed a refret, it made it much more comfortable to play.

Re: Tenor guitar options in Europe

You know, I've read so many different things about it I'm not really sure, but what I do know is that the recent changes they brought in as regards loosening CITES restrictions still didn't cover...

Re: Tenor guitar options in Europe

The 18 series guitars, pre-1969, would've had Brazilian rosewood for the headstock overlay, the fretboard and the bridge as far as I know. I just flew back to Ireland from the States with my '69...

Re: Sierra Hull- tone tips video

This is such a great video, thanks for posting it Zach! It's so easy to fall into the habit of thinking that it's the mandolin "Sometimes my mandolin sounds great and sometimes it sounds meh...."...

  19. Re: New to mandolin. Looking for recommendations

I second the Kentucky 505 - I've played a number of them and found them to be quite decent bang for the buck.

Re: Mandolin recommendation for new player

Of the three I'd lean towards Eastman or Kentucky. Keeping your eyes peeled for second hand ones via the classifieds here could move the Eastman more into your range. Like Alfons I've found the Loars...
