Re: 1939 F5's and the archive

Thanks F5Loar. So there is at least two batches of 39's with the EA prefix? I know there are the 5's and such with numerical serial #'s also so just like the typical mystery of old Gibson why did...

  5. Re: A newbie player looking for an affordable entry level mandoli

Get one properly set-up and you'll be very happy! Also something of some quality with solid woods so Kentucky-Eastman-The Loar etc...or an old Budget brand depression era model even a 40's Harmony...

    Re: New Northfield Model M

That baby has back! I've said some disparaging remarks about Northfields in the past and I used to own "one of the first F-5 traditional serial #50 something that was great-sold to a friend as I had...

    Re: Frank Benko F5 copy

That's true I've seen many Gibson mandolins, say cheap 1923-24 A-1's with the expensive Loar style silver plated, engraved pearl button arrowhead or bump end tuners! Well bump end 25 onward!

    Re: Frank Benko F5 copy

    Re: Orpheum Mandolin circa 1930s?

Check your neck with a straightedge "ruler" to see if its straight? Put it on the fretboard by the nut and in the middle to see if there are any deep gaps? If all is fine your bridge may need...

    Re: Orpheum Mandolin circa 1930s?

I'd say late 30's-40's and worth maybe 400 bucks or so? You can get these regularly on evilbay "ebay" I like it, these all have nice tone!

    Re: Frank Benko F5 copy

That's another very nice A model, love the whole look! What a great little package with the blocks, and bound F-holes! Is this a early 0's model? I ask because of the tuners?

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

Personally I think is the only Loar that can still fetch serious bucks! I'm talking 200K or so? I think I know who owns it as I seen a youtube video recently "a few years old" of someone playing it...

    Re: 1932 F5 copy

Well my 34 Joe Wilson F-5ish mandolin had original tuners on it and I believe they were old A style as well? I don't have it here to check to be sure but I'm 99% positive they were A tuners on that...

    Re: Loar’s Loar!

Your right Brad-that slipped my mind the prices some of those Violins and bows bring compared to say a flamed top Les Paul or a Loar! Those are like tinker toys in price comparison!

    Re: 1932 F5 copy

The more I look at it the more normal it is, finish and construction was well done! It just needs a pickguard:grin:

Can you show us a good photo of the original tuners?

Is that a Mahogany back? And the guard is very thick, is that real shell or just the typical plastic of the period? If its shell I'd buy that in a heartbeat for many quality picks and have a replica...

    Re: Mystery Mandolin

To me it looks like a very well made mandolin in the 30's style? Has an ebony nut that seen in those years, a thick tortoise type guard that looks 30's! Also the tuners look around that vintage, as...

    Re: Loar’s Loar!
