Re: Any clues about this British-made mandolin?

That's not proper Devon, that's more like this:

As for the mandolin, no ideas - not one of mine :) Unless it's a really early Chris Eccleshall maybe, but as has been said already,...

    Re: Fretbars on a Tatterbug

    >Does this sound reasonable?

    Nope, not really :)

Pull them out properly, and there's every chance you'll be able to either:

    * turn them up the other way and reinsert then level and dress, or...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

Also try D'Addario's website - they will either direct you to a reputable local dealer, or to to someone who will ship to your country, doesn't work for every country I'm sure, but the list seems to...

Re: Ten String Electric Thinline Design

My 5 strings are all standard mandolin scale:

Double courses will work at that scale, but you will need to be careful that a pair of thick strings...

Re: 19" octave mandolin - tune as CGDA

    Hi Rob,

Apologies for not seeing this sooner, for sure you could go CGDA on that one, I plugged some numbers into a tension calculator and came up with:

    A .011
    D .016
    G .027
    G .040
    ...

Re: set up question: action vs. tone

IMO .110" is verging on the unplayable. Even .080" (which will seem OK at first) will quickly leave your fingers sore if you're not careful. You should ideally be looking for .060 on the G and .050...

    Re: Shadow bridge pickup?

I had an Eastman with the Shadow bridge-pickup on it, and provided you pre-amped it, it actually worked reasonably well. Nothing like a K&K would mind, but that would be overkill on the Rover anyway.

    Re: New electronics for electric

Unfortunately, there are lots of causes of hum:

    * Single coils - yes they will hum to some degree, but it shouldn't be really bad.
    * Something not earthed: take a multimeter and check that...

Yep Rocklite, it makes extremely good fretboards, and I currently use it on all of mine. It is less dense and less stiff than a really good piece of ebony though. On the other hand, significantly...

Octaves on the G and D is an unusual combination: the Neapolitan ones were generally all unison GDAE, while the German ones were in octaves, with one string in each tuple an octave below normal...

Re: Top and Back Thickness Before Joining

I do no thicknessing at all prior to jointing, then put the jointed top/back through the thickness sander. Also using the string and wedge method of jointing here.
  14. Re: Really, why not? (A rumination on necks and joints)

No one has stated the obvious - you can't do that with oval hole instruments... just saying ;)

Of course some of us have experimented with longitudinal bracing to help keep the body in shape,...

Re: Using inside spanners in forms

I just make the outside of the form the same shape as the inside (so it's effectively a 1" thick rim) and then I can place clamps wherever they're needed.

But yes, damp down the rims before...
  16. Re: Got my shellac flakes! Question about color build up.

Just to say if you don't have spray gear, you can pad on shellac or even apply with a foam brush (2lb cut - after a while you can judge the mix by viscosity - I mix it up a bit thick and then dilute...

Re: Question from Newbie on Bozouki scale length

As mentioned above, short scale bouzoukis are really octave mandolins, 20" scale works well, some classical bowl backed OM's were nearer 17-18" but IMO the strings get mighty thick in that range. ...
