    Re: What's the real difference?

As a different point of view, (I often have one here, ha, ha), consider the instrument as a 'tool for making music'. Does it do a good job or not?

Also everyone is 'coming from' a different level...

Re: "The fiddle is laughing" (no mando)

Great music from one of the best. However I'd like to see the kid play fiddle. (I'll bet he's pretty darn good.)

Just yesterday I looked at my music room scattered with instrument cases and thought that 'every one of these instruments is a superb example of it's type'. Usually I have some dread at considering...

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION - sometimes I find that shouting is the best way to get attention. ha,ha

    "Soft" Pick?

I'm wondering if anyone makes a pick that mimics the sound of fingers on strings? Not fingernails but the 'fleshy part' of finger tips.

Just tried finger picking an octave mandolin and I love the...

Re: Process of learning a classical tune

The 'trick' is in seeing that there is gradual progress. Some people record themselves and listen to it months or even years later. Personally I just tell myself to 'stuff the criticism' and have...

Re: Process of learning a classical tune

In re-reading this, I think J.C. Bryant is just looking for other methods in learning. Not necessarily for a classical piece.

So skills in reading and in understanding musical structure, and...

Believe me I've been embarrassed more times than I can count. Ha, ha.
  15. Re: i am having problems with "clefs" again. Treble or alto

There are many ways to understand music notation. One can get lost when there are so many variables. So it is important to define your situation and your tactics.

In my case I often become like a...

    This chart might help.
  19. Re: i am having problems with "clefs" again. Treble or alto

The 'disadvantage' is that the mandola is lower in pitch. So most of the notes are below the treble staff on ledger lines. (and that is where the alto clef lives...).

This is hard and confusing if...
